           THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Penguins-Our Pens clinched a playoff spot on the final day of the regular season last week, blanking Buffalo 2-0 to punch their postseason ticket. G Marc-Andre Fleury recorded his 10th shutout of the season to lead the league and set a new team record. To ready themselves for the playoff run, the Pens made some roster moves. They re-called D Brian Dumoulin and Scott Harrington and F Scott Wilson from Wilkes Barre-Scranton. The Pens faced off against the New York Strangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night for Game 1. The Pens couldn't keep out of the penalty box and gave up an early goal that set the tone for the game, a 2-1 Strangers win. The Pens bounced back in NYC on Saturday night with a thrilling 4-3 victory. They continue to commit numerous penalties, leaving themselves short-handed. However, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is glad to report that there was a Sidney Crosby-sighting in the Big Apple. The Captain and fellow C Evgeni Malkin were held to just 3 shots on goal in Thursday's loss. Sid came back in a big way Saturday, putting not 1 but 2 pucks on the net. The series is tied 1-1 and shifts to Pittsburgh for Monday night's game. Let's Go Pens!!!

Pirates-Last Saturday night our Pirates were shutout for the first time this season, 6-0 in Milwaukee. Unfortunately, it would also be the first time this week. The Pirates were held scoreless 3 different times in the past 7 days. The Tigers blanked the Bucs 2 days in a row. The Pirates did manage to take their first series this season as they blasted the Brewers on Sunday, 10-2. RH Casey Sadler picked up his first Major League win in the spot start. CF Andrew McCutchen sat out last Saturday night's loss with a sore left knee but hasn't left the lineup since. The Pirates did erupt for 5 runs in a 5-4 Home Opening victory over Detroit with RH Gerrit Cole picking up his first win this season. Following Thursday's off day, the Pirates found the scoreboard and the win column Friday night, a 6-3 win over Milwaukee. They followed that up with another victory last night, beating down the Brewers by a score of 6-2.The Bucs also made a roster move this week, re-calling C Chris Stewart from his rehab assignment to come off the DL. To make room for Stew, the Pirates sent C Tony Sanchez back to Indy. The Pirates will go for their first sweep of the season today as they break out the brooms for the Brewers. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

Steelers-Our Steelers started out the week by re-signing S Will Allen. Allen helps add depth to a depleted Steelers secondary. Meanwhile, a former member of the secondary, free agent CB Ike Taylor decided to join teammate Troy Polamalu in retirement. Ike decided to hang up his cleats rather than try and latch on with another team when the Steelers made it clear they wouldn't bring him back. All the best to Ike! In an effort to re-stock the Steelers roster, the team had some more college players lined up for visits this week. TEs Cameron Clear of Texas A&M, Jeff Heuerman from Ohio State, and UAB's Kennard Backman were expected to visit Pittsburgh. Also coming for visits were WVU G Quinton Spain, Washington State DT Xavier Cooper and DE/OLB Randy Gregory of Nebraska. The Steelers signed Australian P Jordan Berry to compete with fellow Australian P Brad Wing, too. Australian punter. Is that a new trend developing on the South Side? Anyway, to help with all of this player-shuffling, the Steelers announced that they named Terry Cousin as they're Player Engagement Coordinator, whatever that means. If it can lead the Steelers to their 7th Super Bowl, I'm all for it. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
