                                     THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

PENGUINS

The injuries continue to pile up on our Penguins. D Trevor Daley ended up among the walking wounded this week. Daley had knee surgery and is expect to miss 6 weeks. Get well soon, Dales! Then it was announced that D Kris Letang would be day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Get well soon, Tanger! Perhaps in response to this injuries, GM Jim Rutherford cut a trade for a defenseman. He traded away a 2017 2nd round pick and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton F Danny Kristo to Carolina for 12-year veteran Ron Hainsey.

Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team defeated the Philly Flyers at Heinz Field Saturday night in the Stadium Series 4-2. Tanger missed that contest. Pens fans will also be happy to know that Philly D Brandon Manning was suspended for 2 games by the NHL for his high hit on F Jake Guentzel in that game.

In anticipation of the NHL trade deadline, the Pens waived F Eric Fehr. Perhaps it was to clear some cap space for a deadline deal. He ended up clearing waivers.

No deals were made prior to Tuesday night's 3-2 loss in Dallas but the defense certainly could have used some help. In a move that may or may not have been related to the deadline, the Pens recalled D Derrick Pouliot from the Baby Pens.

GM Jim Rutherford did make some deadline deals. Trader Jim sent Fehr, D Steve Oleksy and a 2017 4th round pick to Toronto for D Frank Corrado. GMJR also sent a 2018 4th round pick to Tampa Bay to land D Mark Streit. G Marc-Andre Fleury, the subject of extensive trade speculation all season, was not traded and will play out the rest of the year with the Pens.

Corrado was assigned to WB/S. The Pens also sent D Cameron Gaunce back to the Baby Pens. The moves did not pay immediate dividends as the Pens were upended in Chicago 4-1.

The Pens got back home and got back in the win column last night, defeating Tampa Bay 5-2. They look for another home win tomorrow night when they battle former coach Dan Bylsma and his Buffalo Sabres. 19 games to go in the regular season. Keep on PUCKN. Let's Go Pens!!!!

PIRATES

Grapefruit League action is now under way for our Pirates. In anticipation of the regular season, Manager Clint Hurdle declared over the weekend that RH Gerrit Cole will be the Opening Day starter on Monday, April 3 at Fenway Park versus the Red Sox. RH Jameson Taillon will start the 2nd game. No starter has been announced for the final game of that series. However, RH Ivan Nova will get the start for our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team in the home opener against the Atlanta Braves on Friday, April 7.

3B Jung Ho Kang was sentenced in his native South Korea for his December DUI, his 3rd DUI since 2009. Kang received an 8-month suspended sentence as well as 2 years probation. He's free to join the Bucs in Bradenton for spring training. However, he may still face discipline from MLB and/or the Pirates. There is also the matter of treatment for his alcohol addiction. And there is still the sexual assault accusations levied at him last June in Chicago. Mrs. Black-N-Gold will bring you more news as it develops.

We're less than a month away from Opening Day. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

STEELERS

Our Steelers were awarded a 3rd round compensatory pick by the NFL (pick #105) in this year's draft. That gives our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team a total of 9 picks.

In Steelers legal news, C Maurkice Pouncey and his twin brother Mike, a Dolphins offensive lineman, will go to trail in a civil lawsuit on March 6. The litigation stems from a 2013 incident that occurred in Miami.

The Steelers placed the exclusive franchise tag on free agent RB Le'Veon Bell. Now they will try to sign LBell to a long-term contract. The price tag for running backs that receive the franchise tag is $12.2 million for this season. The "exclusive" part means that Bell cannot negotiate with other teams. The Steelers have until July 15 to sign #26 long-term. Otherwise, he has to play out the season on the 1-year franchise deal.

The Steelers also signed WR Antonio Brown to a 5-year contract. The deal will make AB the highest paid receiver in the league.

The Steelers reached an agreement with LB James Harrison, too. Deebo re-signed with the team for a 2 year deal.

GM Kevin Colbert held a press conference leading up to the NFL Combine this week. During the presser, Colbert announced that all of the Steelers coaches will return next season, including much-maligned OLB Coach Joey Porter. We'll see how that pans out as next season progresses. Once the Combine is done, the Steelers will gear up for the draft and before you know it, it's time for OTAs.

As the draft approaches, the Steelers may want to take an offensive lineman or two following the announcement that Ryan Harris has retired. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
