THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
PENGUINS
Our Pens were in the midst of their Stanley Cup Final with the San Jose Sharks, leading the Team in Teal 3 games to 1. A win last Thursday night would give the Pens their 4th Stanley Cup and their first championship victory in front of the home crowd. Anticipation was in their air from Ambridge to Zelienople. Alas, the champagne would have to remain on ice along with the Pens. The Sharks defeated the home team 4-2.
Game 6 took the Pens all the way back to San Jose. They were able to seal the deal on Sunday night with a 3-1 shellacking of the Sharks. The Pens won Lord Stanley's Cup for a 4th time. Captain Sidney Crosby led the charge and was honored with his 1st Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP.
It was a hell of a run from day 1. Congrats to our Pens. There will be more time to celebrate with the champs tomorrow. The parade is scheduled to get under way at 11:30 am so get there early and help the Pens raise the Cup. Let's Go Pens!!!!
PIRATES
Not all of our favorite Black-N-Gold teams had a good week. Our Pirates have hit rough waters, of late. Their recent string of 31 straight games began to take its toll. Roster moves had to be made to augment the work load.
RH Curtis Partch was optioned to Triple A Indy. 2010 1st round pick, RH Jameson Taillon, was called up from Indy for a spot start. The rookie got a no-decision in the Pirates 6-5 loss in 10 to the Mets.
The following day, Taillon was sent back to Indy. LH Kyle Lobstein was called up. It didn't help matters. The Pirates lost their makeup date in Colorado by a score of 11-5.
The 2016 Amateur Draft began last week. The Pirates selected 3B Will Craig with the 22nd pick out of Wake Forest. With the 41st pick, they drafted LH Nick Lodolo out of Damien High School. They took RH Travis MacGregor from East Lake High School with their 2nd pick, #68 overall. In the 3rd round, the Buccos chose SS Stephen Alemais of Tulane, #105 overall.
The losing, however continued. They lost to the St Louie Cardinals Friday night in 12 innings. They also lost C Francisco Cervelli (hand) and RH Gerrit Cole (triceps) to injury. Cervelli underwent surgery for a broken hamate bone on his left hand and is on the 15 day DL. He's expected to miss 4-6 weeks. The Pirates acquired former C Erik Kratz from the Angels for cash considerations To make room, they DFA'd RH Trey Haley. They also sent INF Cole Figueroa to Indy and called up RH Rob Scahill. RH Arquimedes Carminero was also reinstated from his rehab assignment.
The Pirates still went out and lost again to St Louie 5-1. The Bucs completed the sweep and lost their 5th in a row on Sunday when St Louie stomped them 8-3.
Yesterday was a well-needed off-day. Hopefully the ship gets turned around tonight when they begin a 3-game series with the Mets at Citi Field in New York. They're currently 2.5 games behind the Mets for the 2nd wild card spot. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!
STEELERS
Our Steelers signed 1st round pick, CB Artie Burns of Miami, to a contract. They also concluded OTAs The next step in the offseason process will be mini camp. They still had 1 draft pick that remained unsigned. On Friday they reached a deal with 3rd round pick, DL Javon Hargrave of South Carolina State. All the picks are now signed, sealed and delivered. Time to get to work. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
