Our Pittsburgh Steelers are on the road to Denver for tomorrow's battle with the Broncos. Considering the propensity that Pittsburgh has for penalties, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is devoting a special, playoff-edition of Takeaways to this subject.
Coach Tomlin loves to refer to what goes on "above the neck", meaning the level of intelligence(or lack thereof) that his players exhibit. Based on last week's outcome in Cincy, both the coaches and the players need to get their heads on straight. This means no coaches should engage any opposing players on the sidelines. It also means coaches should not go onto the field unless otherwise directed by the head coach. Coaches need to keep their emotions in check and not get caught up in the drama of the game.
This also applies to the players. Play smart football from the neck up. Yes, football is an emotional game but don't be had. No stupid penalties. No dancing around, acting a fool. Denver QB Peyton Manning will take advantage of the flags. He may not be the Manning of old but he can still exploit a team's weakness. The Steelers committed 10 penalties for 142 yards in Cincy last week. Unsportsmanlike conduct, excessive celebration, taunting, etc., these all fall under that category.
Also, word out of Denver is that the Broncos want revenge on C Cody Wallace for his late hit in the last meeting between these teams (a Steelers win). Please keep in mind when you take that field Sunday that referees typically penalize the player that retaliates, not the one who instigates. Don't become the next Vontaze Burfict or Pacman Jones and penalize your way out of the playoffs. If you do, you'll be watching the Broncos next week in the AFC Championship game.
Use your head. That's that lump 3 feet above your ass. Don't beat yourselves. Beat the Broncos. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
