Scratch my back with a hacksaw, it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins return to home ice tonight to faceoff against the Nashville Predators at PPG Paints Arena. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Prior to the All-Star break, the Pens dropped 2 straight. Gimme a W! 2)The Predators are 11-12-2 on the road. The Pens continue to be one of the best teams on home ice at 20-3-2. There's no place like home! 3)The Pens are still 1st in the league in scoring, averaging 3.5 goals per game. A win vs Nashville to start the 2nd half would be music to my ears. Score early, score often, score BIG Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
Start spreading the news! That's right, Black-N-Gold Nation, it's time, once again, for that internet sensation. Mrs. Black-N-Gold brings to you the latest edition of The Black-N-Gold News, featuring the scoop on all things Black-N-Gold, the Penguins, the Steelers and the Pirates.
THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
PENGUINS
Our Pens went down to Carolina last Friday night and blew away the Hurricanes 7-1. The next game, on Sunday at home against the Bruins, the Pens delivered a Beantown beatdown, battering Boston in a 5-1 win.
One Penguin was rewarded for his exceptional play from the past week. F Conor Sheary was named the NHL's First Star of the Week. It's the 1st such honor for Conor. Congrats!
Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team to stumbled on Tuesday night. They were shutout by St Louie on home ice 3-0. Prior to the game, they welcomed D Brian Dumolin from IR and sent D Cameron Gaunce back to the Baby Pens.
C Evgeni Malkin has been ruled out of the All-Star Game this weekend in LA due to a lower body injury. Also, F Patric Hornqvist suffered a lower body inury, too. Horny got better in a hurry as he registered a goal in last night's 4-3 loss at Boston. Before the game, the Pens sent D Steve Oleksy back to the Baby Pens and called up F Carter Rowney. Get well soon, Geno.
The Pens will be back on the ice on Tuesday night when the faceoff against Nashville at PPG Paints Arena. Get back in the win column. Let's Go Pens!!!!
STEELERS
Maybe you've been under a rock for the past week. Or, perhaps, you saw our Steelers performance in the AFC Championship loss the the Patriots, a 36-17 blowout, and you wish you could hide under a rock. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team's chances of beating Belichick, Brady and the Pats were lessened when RB Le'Veon Bell left the game in the 1st half with a groin injury. The Steelers made it a lot further than people expected when they were 4-6 and riding a 4-game losing streak. They'll have the 30th pick in the draft this year. Choose wisely.
Due to his injury, Bell had to bow out of this weekend's Pro Bowl. In addition, QB Ben Roethlisberger, C Maurkice Pouncey and WR Antonio Brown also declined to participate. However, LB Ryan Shazier was picked as an injury replacement and will make his 1st Pro Bowl appearance. Congrats to Shazee!
The NFL announced that RB Karlos Williams has had his suspension lifted. The Steelers re-signed Vince Williams' brother.
Get ready for the Combine and the draft and OTAs. Oh my! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
PIRATES
Nothing new to report from our Pirates. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team has pitchers and catchers reporting to Bradenton, FL on February 14. Position players are to arrive on February 17. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

Let's go hunt moose on a Harley; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to Boston tonight to battle the Bruins before the All-Star break. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)After soaring like eagles the past several games, the Penguins came crashing back to earth with Tuesday's night's 3-0 loss to St Louie. Find the net & find the win column. Gimme a W! 2)The Pens go to Boston after battering the Bruins at home on Sunday, 5-1. Beat the Bs! 3)In the loss to St Louie, the Pens allowed the Blues to dictate the game. That just won't do. You've got to set the pace and win the race. How do you do that? Remember to rock the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
Yoi and double yoi! Our Pittsburgh Steelers season ended a few weeks too soon but what a ride it was. Now that she's had time to come off the ledge following Sunday's 36-17 pummeling at the hands of the Patriots, Mrs. Black-N-Gold looks back on the 2016 season while also looking ahead to 2017 (start making travel plans for the Super Bowl!). We'll look at this on a unit-by-unit basis. Let's kick things off, shall we?
SPECIAL TEAMS
P Jordan Berry and K Chris Boswell had their good games and their bad games this season. Without Boz, the Steelers would not have won the playoff game in KC. The return game was another story entirely. It seems like the returns are treated as an afterthought because apart from WR Antonio Brown, the Steelers don't have a return threat, at all. And Brown wasn't very impressive this season when he was back there, usually settling for a fair catch. When the Steelers drafted WR Demarcus Ayers, he was highly touted for his return resumes. When he finally made the active roster, the Steelers never even gave him a shot. Surely, Ayers would be better than the ineffective RB Fitzgeral Touissant who returned kicks for a spell this season. And the gunners on the return team didn't truly begin to take their jobs seriously and pin back runners until the playoffs. More often than not, the defense had to play on a short field thanks to large chunks of yardage given up by the special teams. It's time to start treating special teams as an integral part of this organization, which it is. Make special teams "special" again.
OFFENSE
The goal of the offense this season was to average 30 points per game. Close by no cigar at 24.9. They continued to have breakdowns in the red zone, all they way through the playoffs. It will be nice to see RB Le'Veon Bell for an entire season next year (provided the team re-signs the free agent). Will they also see the return of WR Martavis Bryant? Goodness knows Bryant's presence could help in the passing game. When you're forced to go with practice squad pass-catchers in the AFC Championship, your receiving corps is in trouble. Speaking of trouble, can WR Antonio Brown keep out of trouble with the league (TD celebrations, non-league approved cleats) and his coach and teammates (FB Live fiasco)? Or will the Steelers even keep him? And how about TE Ladarius Green? Was that free agent signing money will spent? Now QB Ben Roethlisberger is contemplating retirement (maybe). Good thing the offensive line is rock solid but they may be without LT Aljeandro Villenueva next year as he hits free agency, too. It's a shame that this unit is always shrouded under a cloud of controversy, otherwise it could be legendary.
DEFENSE
The defense had somethings old (LB James Harrison, CB William Gay, LB Lawrence Timmons) and somethings new (CB Artie Burns, S Sean Davis, DL Javon Hargrave). It seemed once the youngsters cracked the starting lineup and Harrison reinserted himself, too, the Steelers started stacking wins. Unfortunately, DL Cam Heyward missed most of the season with injuries. Had Cam stayed healthy, maybe the D could have been scary good. Goodness knows they could have used him in New England. Anyway, if the youngsters can stay focused and maintain a good work ethic, their arrows will be pointing up. Meanwhile, Deebo, Willie & LT are some more players looking at free agency. #92 has already stated that he'd like to return for another season. Don't count on another season in Black-N-Gold for fellow LB Jarvis Jones, who is at the end of his rookie contract. Mrs. Black-N-Gold thinks it's now safe to label the former #1 pick a "bust". The Steelers will probably draft a linebacker or two in the draft.
COACHING
In his season-ending news conference, Coach Tomlin wouldn't commit to all his assistants returning. That's understandable since, like the team themselves, the coaching was consistently inconsistent. Give the credit for rallying the team to a 9-game winning streak when they were in danger of missing the playoffs. It's a a shame that in their losses they looked totally undisciplined and unprepared. Sometimes it's the players. Sometimes it's the coaching. Maybe it's both? It's up to the coaches to figure it out and make the necessary adjustments, much like the changes in the starting lineup that help ignite the winning streak. And, of course, there is the nasty habit of losing on the road to sub-.500 teams. And don't forget, the Steelers have go to stop being the Patriots b*tch. Think about it. When Cower led them to a Super Bowl and when Tomlin got them a Lombardi and another trip to The Big Game, they never faced the Pats. Someone else always had to beat New England for them. Until they knock the Pats down, they'll never, truly, be kings of the mountain.
Mrs. Black-N-Gold will check in with the Steelers from time to time to see how they're doing. We've go the free agency period and the combine and the draft and OTAs and before you know it, it will be time to kickoff training camp. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
Down by the banks of the River Charles! Happy Pigskins & Pucks Day! Our Pittsburgh Steelers take their postseason show on the road to New England this evening to battle the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)It's no secret that the Pats have dominated this series throughout the last several years, including winning an earlier matchup this season. At 14-2 during the regular season, they locked up the #1 see in the AFC. To be the best, you've got to beat the best! 2)Everyone on offense needs to get involved, not just the Killer B playmakers. Someone else has to catch the ball to create space for RB Le'Veon Bell and WR Antonio Brown to work. And QB Ben Roethlisberger needs to improve his play. He hasn't been coming up big on the road as he has in year's past. #7 can't shrink during the big moments. Big Ben needs to play BIG and take the crowd out of the equation. Settling for field goals in this game just won't do. Score early, score often, score BIG! 3)New England QB Tom Brady has one of the fastest triggers in the game. What he doesn't have is his favorite receiver, TE Rob Gronkowski. Former Pitt standout RB Dion Lewis helped negate that loss with some special special teams play last week versus Houston. The Steelers speedy, young defenders such as LBs Ryan Shazier and Bud Dupree as well as DBs Sean Davis and Artie Burns need to rattle Brady's cage. The special teamers need to contain Lewis like they did KC's Tyreek Hill last week. Win and you're in. Get ready for a beatdown in Beantown. Hit 'em early, hit 'em often, hit 'em HARD! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
SLAP SHOTS
Yeah, down by the river! Happy Pucks & Pigskins Day! Our Pittsburgh Penguins return to the home ice of PPG Paints Arena to faceoff against the Boston Bruins this afternoon. These are your keys for today's game. 1)The Pens are on a roll, winning 3 in a row. We want more with win #4! 2)During the winning streak, the Pens have scored 19 goals. Keep on rockin' Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)And don't forget, the Pens have the best record on home ice at 19-2-2. There's no place like home! Get ready for a beatdown of Beantown today. Let's Go Pens!!!!

SLAP SHOTS
Shave my legs with a rusty razor, it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to Carolina tonight to faceoff against the Hurricanes. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Following Wednesday night's 4-1 win in Montreal, the Pens have won 2 straight. Nothing could be fina than a win in Carolina. If it's 3, it's for me! 2)In those 2 games, the Pens have put up 12 goals. Goals, Goals, Goals, baby! 3)Carolina boasts the league's best penalty kill at 89.1%. The Pens power play is ranked 3rd at a 23% clip. Take advantage of the man-advantage and man-up! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
Extra! Extra! Read all about it, The Black-N-Gold News is back in town! It's makes you so happy, puts a smile on your face, every time it comes around. That's because Mrs. Black-N-Gold has all the news for you from our Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates.
THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
STEELERS
Our Steelers OLB Coach Joey Porter received good news a few days before last week's divisional playoff at KC when he was reinstated to the team. Peezy presence on the sidelines may have paid off because last Sunday, our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team advanced to the AFC Championship Game with their 18-16 victory over the Chiefs.
One distraction ends, another begins....Fresh off that victory in KC, WR Antonio Brown made waves. He broadcasted live over Facebook directly from the locker room following the win. It the video, of course, went viral, causing headaches for Coach Tomlin (who was one of many using language that may not be suitable for everyone) and some of his teammates. Coach T vowed to deal with AB and not allow this to be a distraction leading up to this week's game.
Some bad news for rookie S Sean Davis. He was fined $24,309 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on KC's Chris Conley in the divisional round game. He's expected to appeal the fine.
The Steelers will now play for the chance to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl when they battle the Patriots at New England. Kickoff is set for Sunday night at 6:40 pm. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
PENGUINS
Our Penguins found themselves in the midst of a rare losing streak following Saturday night's 6-3 loss in Detroit. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team not only lost the game, but appear to have lost D Kris Letang for a period of time, too. Tanger was placed on IR with a lower body injury. The Pens called up F Jake Guentzel and D Chad Ruhwedel from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
They then put a stop to the losing streak by clipping the Caps in a wild, 8-7, win in OT on Monday. C Matt Cullen suffered a foot injury in this contest and is expected out 3-4 weeks.
Another roster move was made. D Cameron Gaunce was brought up from the Baby Pens. D David Warsofsky was sent back to WB/S.
The Pens made it 2 wins in a row last night in Montreal. They downed the Habs 4-1. They'll continue their road trip tomorrow night in Carolina. Let's Go Pens!!!!
PIRATES
Our Pirates were busy trying to get arbitration-eligible players under contract before the MLB deadline. Actually, teams are free to continue to negotiate with their players after the deadline to turn in salary proposals. They can do so up until the arbitration hearing. However, our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team prefers to exchange salaries, and if/when the deadline arrives, they go through the arbitration process.
Several players did come to agreements with the Bucs. SS Jordy Mercer signed for a $4.325 million deal. RH Juan Nicasio reached a $3.65 million deal. RH Gerrit Cole agreed to $3.75 million. Last week, Mrs. Black-N-Gold mentioned that RHs Drew Hutchison and Jared Hughes agreed to contracts. The only player that is going to arbitration is LH Tony Watson.
Meanwhile, the countdown to spring training is under way. Pitchers and catchers report on February 14. How appropriate that they arrive in Bradenton in Valentine's Day because Mrs. Black-N-Gold loves baseball. Position players report on February 17. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

Scratch my back with a hacksaw, its a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins are back on the road again tonight when they faceoff with the Canadiens in Montreal. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Yes, the Pens found the win column Monday night with their 8-7 victory in OT. They also gave up 7 goals in the process. That's 24 goals against in a 4 game span. You're better than this. Gimme some D! 2)The Pens did find the net 8 times on Monday. Love the Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)The Habs love their home ice, where they're 16-4-2. The Pens continue to have road woes, going 8-9-3. Make road kill out of 'em! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
We're shipping up to Boston (or at least to Foxboro)! With Sunday's nail-biting 18-16 win over the Chiefs our Pittsburgh Steelers advance to the AFC Championship game on Sunday to battle the New England Patriots. In following with Coach Tomlin and QB Ben Roethlisberger's edict, I won't give New England any bulletin board fodder by referring to them as the Cheatroits. But before we move on, Mrs. Black-N-Gold brings you The Good, The Bad and The Ugly from Sunday's game.
GOOD
A win is a win, no matter how ugly it is. And a win is a good thing. It was also a good thing for the Steelers that the offensive line led the way again this week because RB Le'Veon Bell had another record-breaking game. LBell broke his own mark set the week before when he rushed for 170 yards on 30 carries. Yes, #26 is on his way to the record books with his performance in his 1st postseason. But he's not alone.....
Game ball goes to K Chris Boswell. The Wizard of Boz put all 18 points no the board on Sunday. The Wizard of Boz did so in route to setting a new league record with 6 field goals. Mrs. Black-N-Gold never likes to see our Steelers settle for 3 but she knows if it comes down to a field goal to win a playoff game, Boz is definitely boss.
BAD
#7 doesn't seem to be too lucky for the Steelers, these days, especially on the road. Ben continued his unimpressive play away from Heinz Field on Sunday by going 20 for 31 for 224 yards and an interception to go along with a 72.5 QB rating. What is wrong with Ben? He and his receivers look out of sync more often than not. Could it be that they're unable to find a rhythm when the running game takes over? Or is Big Ben shrinking in big moments? Whatever the problem, no doubt Ben needs to find his mojo on the road so the Steelers can continue the Stairway to 7.
UGLY
Mrs. Black-N-Gold will tell you what is ugly. It seems like every week, the Steelers are dealing with outside obstacles to tackle while preparing for the week ahead. If it's not Terry Bradshaw bad-mouthing Coach T, it's Joey Porter getting into on the South Side. This week's distraction is brought to you by WR Antonio Brown and his inability to keep the inner sanctum of the locker room from the prying eyes of the media and fans, alike. Tony Toetap may not get that some teammates and/or coaches may prefer to keep what goes on in the locker in the locker room. True, some others have lifted the lid off the locker room in the past but doing so may create a rift with those that don't appreciate this practice. In true Steelers fashion, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is certain they team will brush this off as AB being AB and focus on the task at hand. Otherwise, it could get ugly.
Speaking of "the task at hand", the Steelers head up to Foxboro for a business trip this weekend when they battle Tom Brady and the boys for the right to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. It's too late to turn back now. Keep moving forward, onward and upward. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

Hop in the Cordova, baby, we're going bowling; it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins return to home ice tonight at PPG Paints Arena to faceoff against the Washington Capitals. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Revenge will be on the Pens minds following last week's 5-2 loss at Washington. The Caps also blistered the Pens the time before that, 7-1. It's payback time! 2)Thanks to Saturday's 6-3 loss in Detroit, the Pens have lost 3 straight, giving up 15 goals during that streak. De-Fense! 3)The Pens have been putrid on the road this season. They do much, much better at home where they're 18-2-2. There's no place like home & there's nothing like Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
Kansas City here we come! Our Pittsburgh Steelers take their postseason show on the road today when they clash with the Chiefs in Kansas City. These are your keys for today's game. 1)The Chiefs enjoyed a bye last week while the Steelers battled the Dolphins to advance to the divisional round of the playoffs. KC Coach Andy Reid has a career record of 19-2 following a bye. If the Steelers lose it's bye-bye. If the Steelers win, they move on to the AFC Championship Game in New England. Win and you're in! 2)In the 4th game of the season, KC came to town and the Steelers crushed them 43-14. Surely, they'll be on the lookout for revenge. Again, the Killer Bs need to "B" ready and set the tone quickly by getting on the board and taking the fans out of the game. Score early, score often score BIG! 3)The defense needs to look out for QB Alex Smith's favorite target, TE Travis Kelce. The special teams need to keep return man Tyreek Hill boxed in. Hit 'em early, hit 'em often, hit 'em HARD! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

Get in the fastlane, Grandma, the bingo game is ready to roll; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins close out their road trip tonight in Detroit when they faceoff against the Red Wings. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)After a December to Remember, the Pens are suffering from an earl January swoon by dropping their last 2. Their penalty kill has gone AWOL. In Thursday's 4-1 loss to Ottawa, the Pens allowed 2 of 5 power play goals. For the week, they've given up 8 of 13. Kill 'em all! 2)In the 3 games played since their bye week, the Pens have allowed their opponent to score 1st in each game. Score early, score often, score BIG! 3)As a matter of fact, the Pens have only scored 3 goals in their past 2 games. Crank up the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
Start spreading the news! Because Mrs. Black-N-Gold has it all for you. She's got the latest information for Black-N-Gold Nation on our Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Pirates. It's time, once again, the another edition of The Black-N-Gold News.
THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
STEELERS
Some of our Steelers received good news this week when All-Pro announcements were made. Congrats to WR Antonio Brown who made 1st Team All-Pro and RB Le'Veon Bell and G David DeCastro who were named 2nd Team All-Pros.
And we can't forget that our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team also won their Wild Card matchup with Miami. The Steelers dominated the Dolphins in the 30-12 victory. The win gave the Steelers their 35th postseason W, most in NFL history.
Unfortunately, the win did come at a price. It looked like QB Ben Roethlisberger suffered an ankle injury when he showed up to post-game interviews in a walking boot. The boot was removed later in the week as Ben claimed it was precautionary so as not to re-aggravate a previous foot injury.
Also, OLB Coach Joey Porter was arrested on the South Side following the game. He has since been released on bail and placed on leave by the Steelers. Peezy got a reprieve later in the week when the 6 counts were reduced to just 2, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. His status with the team is still up in the air.
More bad news as OLB Bud Dupree received a fine to the tune of $18,231 for his hit on Miami QB Matt Moored. Bud is expected to appeal the fine to have the amount lessened.
Apparently the Steelers were quite pleased with LBell's performance in the playoff game. Since then, word has emerged that they plan to place the franchise tag on #26 while they negotiate a long-term deal. Mrs. Black-N-Gold will keep you posted as this and other stories develop.
In the meantime, get ready for more playoff action. The Steelers take their show on the road for a showdown with the Chiefs in the divisional round. Kansas City here we come for a 1pm kickoff. Winner plays for the AFC Championship. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
PENGUINS
Our Pens continued to move players around as they prepared to return to the ice following their bye week. They re-called G Tristan Jarry and D Chad Ruhwedel from Wilkes/Barre-Scranton.
The Steelers weren't the only team to win on Sunday. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team picked up right where they left off, in the win column. They trounced Tampa Bay Sunday evening 6-2.
A schedule change was announced for the Pens home gave versus Philly for March 26. That will now be a 7pm faceoff. Mark it down.
Congrats to C Evgeni Malkin. Geno will join C Sidney Crosby at the end of the month for the NHL All-Star Game. Hallelujah Hollywood, the boys are going to LA!
More moves as the Pens re-called D David Warsofsky and sent Jarry back down to the Baby Pens.
The moves didn't help. The Pens went to Washington on Wednesday and lost to the Caps 5-2.
So they made another move. They sent D Chad Ruhwedel back down to WB/S.
Something happened to the Pens last night that hadn't in the past 90 games. They lost 2 straight games in regulation when they fell to the Senators 4-1. They'll try to get back in the win column when they close out their road trip tomorrow night in Detroit. Let's Go Pens!!!!
PIRATES
The hot stove has gotten ice cold for our Pirates, of late. However, the Bucs did lose a player recently. The White Sox claimed PF Wily Garcia off waivers from our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team.
Other than that, the only noteworthy news is that they Buccos began voluntary mini-camp on Monday. We're getting closer to Opening Day. Pitchers and catchers report to Bradenton on February 14 and position players on February 17.
The Pirates avoided arbitration with 2 RHs last night. They agreed to a $2.3 million deal with Drew Hutchison and $2.2825 million deal with Jared Hughes. They have until 1pm today to come to terms with RHs Gerrit Cole and Juan Nicasio, LH Tony Watson and SS Jordy Mercer. While teams are still allowed to negotiate with players before their hearing date, the Bucs, typically do not do so. If anyone else agrees to terms, Mrs. Black-N-Gold will let you know.
Until then, hope springs eternal. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens look to get back in the win column following last night's loss to the Caps, 5-2. Veto the Senators! 2)In their only meeting this season, the Pens pasted the Sens 8-5. Rock the Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)The Pens lone goals last night were both courtesy of the power play. Man-up! Let's Go Pens!!!!

Lookout, Loretta, it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road tonight to faceoff against the Capitals in Washington, DC. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)This game has all the makings of a barn-burner. It's the President's Trophy winner versus the Stanley Cup winner. Guess what? We got the Cup! 2)The Caps are 1st in the league in goals against, allowing an average of just 2 per game. The Pens bring their #1 ranked goals per game offense to town (3.5). It's all about the Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)The Caps are 3rd in the NHL on the penalty kill at 86.8%. The Pens have the 4th best power play at a 22.6% clip. Take advantage of the man-advantage and man-up! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
You gotta win to get in! Our Pittsburgh Steelers advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs yesterday and gained some revenge when they demolished the Miami Dolphins at Heinz Field 30-12. Mrs. Black-N-Gold takes a look at the game, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.
GOOD
Oh! There was a whole lotta good goin' on! This was on both the defensive side and the offensive side. What do you expect with a 30-12 score?
First of all, congrats to RB Le'Veon Bell who set a new Steelers rushing record in his 1st career playoff game. LBell ran 29 times for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns. Juice was loose, proving that Bell is a BEAST. And let's not forget WR Antonio Browns contributions. AB caught 5 passes for 124 yards and 2 TDs. Then, there was QB Ben Roethliberger. Big Ben came up big with a 13 of 18 day for 197 yards, 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions and a 105.3 passer rating. Yes, the Killer Bs brought their A game yesterday. And don't forget the offensive line. They paved the way for Le'Veon's record-breaking day and kept Ben clean for most of the way (just 1 sack).
And how about that defense. They held Miami RB Jay Ajayi to just 16 carries for 33 yards. They also recovered 2 fumbles and picked off 1 pass. That goes along with their 5 sacks, 6 TFLs and 9 QB hits. And at one point, they forced Miami turnovers on 3 consecutive series. No doubt about it. This D came to play!
BAD
I gotta tell ya, as GOOD as the defense and offense were, the special teams was their usual not-so-special selves. K Chris Boswell shanked a PAT. They allowed a fake punt to go for a 1st down. They gave up 119 yards on kick returns for a 29.8 yard average. They allowed a 58 yard return at one point. Good thing the D bailed them out. Poor special teams play won't get you to payday. The further you go in the playoffs, the more your porous special teams will be exposed. Clean it up.
UGLY
With a 30-6 lead well in hand going into the 4th quarter, Mrs. Black-N-Gold couldn't help but wonder why Ben, Bell & Brown were still in the game. Especially after Ben landed awkwardly, at one point and was then wearing a walking boot on his ankle after the game. Ultimately, some of the starters sat late in the 4th quarter but what was the point in leaving them in the game? Coach T, don't you want your men healthy for the rest of the ride through the postseason? When you've got the win in hand, put your playmakers on the bench.
Our Steelers are back at it next week in the divisional round of the playoffs. They'll travel to KC to face the Chiefs. You may recall that the Steelers slaughtered KC 43-13 in week 4 at home. It may not be that easy this week on the road. Get ready for more playoff football. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

Happy Pucks & Pigskins Day! Mrs. Black-N-Gold is smiling like a butcher's dog 'cause it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins return to home ice tonight to faceoff against the Tampa Bay Lightning at PPG Paints Arena. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Going back to last year, the Pens have won 4 straight. Keep the drive alive with #5! 2)Tampa Bay has a losing record on the road at 8-11-2. The Pens are an impressive 17-2-2 on home ice. There's no place like home! 3)The Lightning are 22nd in the league in goals against, surrendering an average of 2.9 per game. Even after a week off, the Pens are still 1st in goals per game at 3.4. Light 'em up with Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!
THE 50-YARD LINE
Happy Pigskins & Pucks Day! Chew tobacco, chew tobacco, spit, spit, spit! Our Pittsburgh Steelers matchup against the Miami Dolphins at Heinz Field today in an AFC Wild Card game. These are your keys for today's game. 1)You may recall that the Steelers were manhandled in Miami back in October, losing 30-15. Today the season really starts. You can't afford any miscues. Go hard or go home! 2)In that loss, the Steelers defense was gashed for over 200 yards rushing by the 'Fins. You have to make this team one-dimensional, especially with Miami missing starting QB Ryan Tannehill due to injury. No matter who is taking the snaps, get on his case and in his face. Hit 'em early, hit 'em often, hit 'em HARD! 3)The Dolphins D is ranked 29th in the league. However, they have their version of Vontaze Burfict-south in DL Ndamkong Suh. He's one of the dirtiest players in the league with his leg whips and trips. Watch out for him but don't get sucked into to playing his game. If it's penalty-free it's for me. And keep in mind, this will be the first time that the killer B's, QB Ben Roethlisberger, WR Antonio Brown and RB Le'Veon Bell will play together in a playoff game. Take advantage of one of the worst defenses in the NFL. You may have 'Fins to the left and 'Fins to the right but play smart football. Put the ball in the hands of the playmakers. Big Ben and the boys need to play big. Score early, score often, score BIG! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
What's the news across Black-N-Gold Nation? Mrs. Black-N-Gold has the information. She's got the latest scoop on all our Favorite Black-N-Gold Teams: The Steelers, the Pens and the Pirates. That's right, it's time for another edition of The Black-N-Gold News.
THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
STEELERS
Some of our Steelers received organizational awards that are handed out at the end of the regular season. Congrats to LB Arthur Moats who won the Chief Award that is named after Steelers founder Art Rooney. And congratulations to S Sean Davis, the winner of the Joe Greene Great Performance Award as the team's Rookie of the Year. Job well done, guys!
Speaking of "a job well done", that wasn't the case with Sunday's regular season finale but it was a win. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team clipped the Clowns 27-24 in OT.
Some good news for former Steelers G Alan Faneca this week. Faneca was announced as a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The inductees will be announced Super Bowl weekend. Unfortunately another former Steelers, WR Hines Ward, did not make the cut.
Another honor this week for RB Le'Veon Bell. The Beast was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month. Congrats to LBell!
The Steelers are now preparing for their AFC Wild Card game this Sunday at Heinz Field. The matchup versus Miami is a 1pm kickoff. It's one-and-done so go hard or go home. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
PENGUINS
Our Penguins suffered more injuries this week which resulted in more roster moves, as well. G Matt Murray is now week-to-week with a lower body injury. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team called up G Tristan Jarry from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take backup G Marc-Andre Fleury. They also sent D Derrick Pouliout back to the Baby Pens.
The Pens rang in the New Year in winning fashion last week. The defeated the Canadiens 4-3 in OT. That sent them to their bye week with a win. They also saw the return of D Olli Maatta, D Kris Letang and F Bryan Rust from various ailments. The off-week gives them even more time to get healthy and get some much-needed rest, considering they played well into June on their way to the Cup.
With the week off, the Pens sent some players down to WB/S to keep them fresh: G Tristan Jarry, D David Warsofsky and D Chad Ruhwedel.
Congrats to G Marc-Andre Fleury. Flower was honored as the NHL's 3rd Star of the Week. More congrats are in order, C Evgeni Malkin was named NHL 2nd Star of the Month. Congrats, Geno! And C Sidney Crosby was voted Captain of the Metro squad for the NHL All-Star Game. Congrats to the Captain!
And a big "Thank you" to the Pens. Their next game was originally scheduled for Sunday at PPG Paints Arena with a 1pm faceoff against the Lightning. Realizing that this would be a conflict for Black-N-Gold Nation with the Steelers game at the same time, the Pens changed the start of their game to 5pm. Let's Go Pens!!!!
PIRATES
Our Pirates made a roster move this week when the signing of RH Ivan Nova became official. To make room for SuperNova, our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team designated OF Wily Garcia for assignment.
Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang received more bad news this week. South Korea has dropped Kang from their WBC roster, in lieu of his recent legal troubles.
The Bucs continue to be mentioned in the mix for White Sox LH Jose Qunitana, but so are several other teams. If it happens, Mrs. Black-N-Gold will let you know. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN
As Mrs. Black-N-Gold types these words, it is exactly 3 months until our Pittsburgh Pirates open the regular season against the AL East champion Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. It's time we take a look at the Pittsburgh Baseball Club's offseason, thus far.
When looking at our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball's Teams offseason, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is reminded of a sign that would hang in one of her favorite drinking establishments. It said "Free beer tomorrow." Now I'm sure that there is the "In Neal We Trust" crowd that is ready to string me alive. How dare Mrs. Black-N-Gold imply that "Bottom Dollar" Bob Nutting and his band of merry men are fleecing us Pirates fans. Put the rope away for a minute and let me finish.
Yes, the Bucs signed RH Daniel Hudson to help out in the bullpen and brought back RH Ivan Nova (at what may be a steal for 3 years and $26 million). But don't forget the "financial flexibility" they were afforded with the Liriano salary dump of last year. Yes, the Buccos "obtained" RH Drew Hutchison in that deal. However, when the subject of this year's starting 5 comes up, Hutchison is not even mentioned in that conversation.
Mrs. Black-N-Gold did hear the rumor that is being bandied about, the one about the Pirates going hard after White Sox LH Jose Quintana. Mrs. Black-N-Gold supports this move wholeheartedly. The problem is, she questions the validity of said rumor. We've been teased with such tasty morsels in the past. The Bucs were said to be in pursuit of LH Cole Hamels, LH David Price, RH Chris Archer, blah, blah, blah. Yes, it was ESPN's Buster Olney who broke the Quintana story from a supposed credible White Sox source. But the conspiracy theorist in me can't help but wonder if Chicago planted that seed to see if it may spark interest from other teams. Besides, word on the street is if the Pirates do nab Quintana, they'll only do so if they are able to unload CF Andrew McCutchen. What is the point of getting Quintana if you're going to trade your face of the franchise instead of going all in and hope for a bounce back year of MVP caliber from Cutch?
The Pirates also let valued bench players such as UTIL Sean Rodriguez and OF Matt Joyce go. That's their prerogative but the options to replace them internally are suspect, at best. Adam Frazier has the offensive tools to get on base but has nowhere near the defensive acumen of SRod. Other possibilities include the light hitting Alen Hanson and the even-lighter hitting Gift Ngope, if he's worked his way out of the Bucs doghouse. Perhaps GM Neal Huntington is waiting to catch late lightening in a bottle like he did last spring with Joyce and INF David Freese. Just remember, for every Freese there is a Cole Figueroa and many more just like him.
And, please, don't even bring up the Pirates budgetary constraints. Those are all self-imposed by the 9th richest owner in MLB. Small market teams such as KC and Cleveland have reached the World Series (and, in KC's case won). The Indians had a lower attendance mark than the Bucs last year but had a higher payroall and they traded top prospects to the Yankees to get RH Andrew Miller, who helped propel them to Game 7 versus the Cubs. The Pirates traded top prospects to get Toronto to take Liriano and his salary off the Bucs books. And the Indians just signed DH Edwin Encarnacion to a 3 year $60 million deal.
Also, look at how the other professional sports teams in the 'Burgh have fared since the Buccos last won a World Series in 1979. The Steelers have been to 5 Super Bowls, winning 3. The Penguins have been to 5 Stanley Cup Finals and won 4. The Pirates haven't even won a playoff series since '79.
Meanwhile, NH and crew continue to preach that they want to be competitive for the long haul. President Frank Coonelly even bristles at the idea that the Bucs are cheap. But Mrs. Black-N-Gold sees the writing on the wall. It's like "Free Beer Tomorrow". As a matter of fact, that should be the PBC's slogan for the 2017 season. Maybe that will put asses in the seats.
Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
It had to go to overtime but our Pittsburgh Steelers were able to run their winning streak to 7 games yesterday, clipping the Clowns 27-24 to end the regular season. It wasn't pretty. It was pretty bad. It was pretty ugly. We'll get to that later because it's time for Mrs. Black-N-Gold to bring you The Good, The Bad and the Ugly from yesterday's victory
GOOD
In a meaningless game, our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football kept their winning streak alive while beating the WORST team in the league. Yes, Black-N-Gold Nation pushed the panic button when it look like the Clowns were going to get their 2nd win of the season. But is this a hollow victory for the Steelers? Did the win come at a cost?
BAD
Both teams share the blame when it comes to being bad. For the Steelers, it was plain to see why some of yesterday's starters are, typically, bench-warmers. For the Clowns it always came down to the fact that they're still Cleveland. Sure, the Cavaliers and Indians wiped away most of that stigma with their most recent runs, but the Clowns look like they're destined to always be The Clowns.
UGLY
There was enough ugliness to go around yesterday, too. Ineffectiveness and mental miscues made it look like no one wanted to win this contest. But there was even something uglier than that.
2 more members of the defensive line left yesterday's game. Rookie DL Javon Hargrave left under the concussion protocol and practice squad pick up DL Johnny Maxey exited with an ankle injury. You can't rest every player in a "meaningless" game. Someone's GOT to play. Still, the Steelers lack of D-Line depth may have finally caught up to them. On top of that, Coach Mike Tomlin played some of his regulars for the ENTIRE game, including overtime. Goodness knows, the Steelers can't afford to have players gassed in next week's Wild Card game.
The AFC North standings to end the season are as follows: Steelers win it with an 11-5 mark. The Baltimorons lost to the Bungles to finish 8-8. The win left Cincy with a record of 6-9-1. The Clowns get the #1 pick in the draft with a mark of 1-15.
Speaking of next week, we now know the Steelers opponent for their Wild Card playoff game at Heinz Field. It will be the Miami Dolphins. The same Dolphins team that demoralized the Steelers 30-15 back in October. Surely revenge will be on the Steelers minds. Mrs. Black-N-Gold hopes they have enough healthy bodies to get through it. No word yet on date/time. The kickoff is Sunday at 1pm. Until then, get healthy, get rested, get ready. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
