No sleep till Brooklyn; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to Brooklyn tonight to faceoff against the New York Islanders (I know, that sentence doesn't make sense, right? Playing the Islanders in Brooklyn?). These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)With Saturday night's 4-3 shootout victory, the Pens have won 2 straight. If it's 3, it's for me! 2)The Isles rank 25th in the league on the power play at 12.9%. This is good news for the Pens since they're #28 in the NHL in penalty kill at 77.2%. Kill 'em all! 3)The Pens are 8th in goals per game, at a 2.9 clip. They may have an opportunity to pad that stat since New York is 24th in goals against, allowing an average of 3 per game. It's all about the Goals, Goals, Goals, baby! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
Our Pittsburgh Steelers are thankful for a Thanksgiving night win over the Indy Colts 28-7. Now that Mrs. Black-N-Gold's holiday weekend has calmed down and she's sobered up and awakened from her food coma, it's time to take a look at The Good, The Bad & The Ugly from the Steelers victory. See if you and your fellow friends in Black-N-Gold Nation agree.
GOOD
There was a lot to like in this convincing win. Like Thanksgiving dinner, there was lots and lots of good stuff. For instance, the defense continued to point the arrow up with 3 sacks and 2 interceptions. Both of the picks came from members of the much-maligned secondary, S Mike Mitchell and CB William Gay. Mitchell feasted on the Colts offense for much of the evening, delivering some of the hardest hits of the night. The D also held RB Frank Gore to just 28 yards on 15 carriers. And who could forget the goal line stands on back-to-back series? Yes, the defense looked like the Steelers D of old. But don't get too excited. Remember, the defense was dominate against an 0-11 Cleveland Clowns team and an Indy Colts team sans QB Andrew Luck. But this performance gave the Steelers consecutive wins on the road against teams that were .500 or worse. That's something we haven't seen in these parts in a long, long time.
Let us not forget the offense. They looked pretty good, too. QB Ben Roethlisberger connected with WR Antonio Brown for 3 touchdowns. That was the first 3 TD game for AB in his career. And Le'Veon Bell carried the ball 23 times for 120 yards and a touchdown. The offensive line also kept Ben clean for another week. Plus, there were no turnovers. It doesn't get much better than this.
BAD
It's a shame the special teams unit didn't get in on the action. They allowed a 35 yard reception on a punt fake that led to Indy's only score of the game. They also continue to give up huge chunks of yardage on returns, losing the field-position battle. If this keeps up, (not so) special teams coach Danny Smith may want to consider updating his resume (Mrs. Black-N-Gold is available for the gig).
UGLY
Two things looked particularly ugly to Mrs. Black-N-Gold. First, was the fact that the defense allowed the Indy offense to march down the field on them not once but twice. Thus the goal line stands. They would never have been in the position to defend the goal line had they not given up big chunks of yardage and failed to get off the field on crucial 3rd and 4th down situations.
Secondly, the touchdown celebration by AB and LBell led to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that contributed to Indy's TD. You're excited. We get that. But you don't see your teammates running around, acting the fool and getting flagged for it.
Both of these points may be Mrs. Black-N-Gold just nitpicking but they are points that need to be recognized and addressed by the coaching staff. It's details such as these that can make or break you come playoff time.
Now our Steelers stand alone atop the AFC North with a 6-5 record. They'll have a week to rest their weary bones as they get ready to battle the New York Giants at Heinz Field next Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, the rest of the division plays today. The 5-5 Baltimorons travel to Cincy to face the 3-6-1 Bungles. And the 0-11 Clowns will face the aforementioned Giants. The Giants are no slouches at 7-3 so be ready. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

I'll be cow-kicked, it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins return to home ice tonight at PPG Paints Arena to faceoff against the New Jersey Devils. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens look to get back in the win column tonight after getting pummeled by the Wild yesterday, 6-2. Find the net and find the win column! 2)The Devils also lost yesterday, 5-4. Give 'em hell! 3)Giving up 6 goals while you only score 2 just won't do. G Matt Murray is expected to start tonight between the pipes. The D has got to help Murray. And, of course, don't forget the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

Take a walk on the Wild side; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins faceoff against the Wild in Minnesota this afternoon. These are your keys for today's game. 1)The Pens got back in the win column in a big way Wednesday, routing the Rangers 6-1. The 6 goals were a season-high for the Pens. It's all about the Goals, Goals, Goals, baby! 2)The Pens held the NHL's best scoring team to just 1 goal in that contest. They also allowed just 17 shots on goal the entire game. De-fense! 3)The Pens are looking for some revenge for their 4-2 loss to the Wild a few weeks ago. Run wild on Minnestoa! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
Chew tobacco, chew tobacco, spit, spit, spit! Our Pittsburgh Steelers take their show on the road to Indy tonight for a prime time Thanksgiving game against the Colts. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Steelers may be in luck (pun intended). Colts QB Andrew Luck is out for the game due to concussion protocol. Regardless, Indy is 5-5 and, like the Steelers, fighting for their playoff lives. Don't take them lightly. Bring your A game! 2)In Sunday's win over Cleveland, the Steelers D had a season-best 8-sack game. No matter who is playing QB for the other team, hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD! 3)QB Ben Roethlisberger didn't put up prime fantasy numbers last Sunday but he and the rest of the offense didn't turn the ball over, either. This game will be played in a dome with no concerns of the elements so look for Ben and the boys to air it out. Score early, score often, score BIG! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL OF BLACK-N-GOLD NATION!

If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to New York tonight to faceoff against the Rangers. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens are in a funk. They've dropped 2 straight and have lost 4 of 6. During that 6-game stretch, the have not scored more than 2 goals per game. Find the net and find the win column! 2)They're looking to exact some revenge on the Rangers who routed them on Monday 5-2. We need a W in NYC! 3)The Rangers lead the league in goals per game with 4.1. The Pens are ranked #9 at 2.8. Rock the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
Stop the presses! Stop the presses! It's that time again, Black-N-Gold Nation. It's time for Mrs. Black-N-Gold to bring to you all the latest news on our Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. Yes, it's time for the newest edition of The Black-N-Gold News.
THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
STEELERS
The injuries continue to pile up on our Steelers as more roster moves were made. The Steelers placed LB Steven Johnson on injured reserve. They re-signed LB LJ Fort to take his place. It was also announced that their defensive captain, DE Cam Heyward, would miss the remainder of the season with a pectoral injury.
Some good news for some former Steelers this week, G Alan Faneca and WR Hines Ward were named as semifinalists for the 2017 Pro Football Hall of Fame. Good luck on getting the gold jacket to both!
Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team officially placed Cam the Man and WR Markus Wheaton on IR. Get well soon, Cam & Markus! They also activated LB Bud Dupree from IR and promoted RB Daryl Richardson from the practice squad.
The Steelers found the win column in Cleveland on Sunday with a 24-9 victory over the Clowns. They are now tied for 1st in the AFC north at 5-5. The Baltimorons are also in 1st and currently hold the tiebreaker. The Steelers can claim the top spot all for themselves with a win on Thursday night at Indy. Celebrate Thanksgiving with your loved ones by sharing some dessert while cheering the Steelers on to a win. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
PENGUINS
Our Penguins had an up-and-down week. They traveled to Washington DC and got crushed by the Capitals 7-1.
They also were hit with injuries. F Patric Hornqvist is day-to-day with a concussion. F Chris Kunitz is out with a lower-body injury. Get well soon, Horny & Kuni!
The Pens got back in the win column on Friday night. They defeated the Islanders 3-2 in overtime. There was bonus hockey again on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Pens fell to the Sabres 2-1 in a shootout.
Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey team ultimately placed Kuni on injured reserve. In a corresponding move, they called up F Jake Guentzel from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Guentzel made his presence known last night, scoring the Pens 2 goals in a 5-2 loss to the NY Rangers. Congrats to Jake for scoring his 1st NHL goal on his 1st shot! They'll have a chance for revenge when they travel to New York tomorrow night to faceoff against the Rangers. Find the net and find the win column. Let's Go Pens!!!!
PIRATES
The hot stove hasn't heated up yet for our Pirates. However, our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team did make 1 move this week. They added RH Clay Holmes to the 40-man roster. We'll see if they make more moves as the offseason progresses. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
We have a winner! Our Pittsburgh Steelers finally found the win column, crushing the Clowns yesterday in Cleveland 24-9. Today Mrs. Black-N-Gold has The Good, The Bad and the Ugly from yesterday's game.
GOOD
Ending a 4-game losing streak is a good thing. RB Le'Veon Bell had a very good day. #26 rushed 28 times for 146 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 8 passes for 55 yards. The offensive line had a pretty good day. They paved the way for L Bell and kept QB Ben Roethlisberger clean all afternoon.
The defense had a good day, too. They recorded 8 sacks. DL Stephon Tuitt led the way with 2.5 and LB Arthur Moats had 1.5. Congrats to LB James Harrison. Silverback's 1 sack made him the Steelers All-Time Sack Leader. LB Ryan Shazier had a sack/strip that DL Javon Hargrave fell on in the end zone for his 1st NFL TD. And CB Artie Burns snagged his 2nd interception of the season.
All in all, it was a good day for the Steelers.
BAD
Leave it to Mrs. Black-N-Gold to put a black (and gold) cloud around this silver lining. For your consideration: The Steelers offense only managed to find the end zone 1 time yesterday. Against an 0-10 team. That's bad, that's very bad. The Steelers stalled in the red zone twice in the 1st half and had to settle for field goals thanks to K Chris Boswell. If not for Cleveland's propensity for penalties before the end of the 1st half, our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team may not have found the end zone, at all. They also were forced to punt on multiple occasions in the 2nd half and only managed separation from Cleveland thanks to the aforementioned sack/strip TD and another Boz three. Settling for field goals just won't cut it. Fix this and find the end zone.
UGLY
True, the Steelers looked bad on the way to their recent 4-game losing sreak. But Cleveland? Boy, they're just, plain UGLY. No wonder they're 0-11. Good thing the Cavs won the NBA championship back in June and the Indians made a run to the World Series. Otherwise, Cleveland fans would have nothing to hang their hat on.
Thanks to the Steelers win and the Baltimorons loss to the Cowboys, the Steelers are now in a tie atop the AFC North at 5-5. Keep in mind, the Baltimorons currently have the tiebreaker. For now. Cincy also lost dropping them to 3-6-1. Bringing up the rear is the 0-11 Clowns.
The Steelers have a short week this week. They're the Thanksgiving prime team game on Thursday when they travel to Indy to clash with the Colts. Another win against an AFC opponent could go a long way in the standings. Break out the knives and carve up the Colts. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

Scratch my back with a hacksaw, it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins return to home ice tonight to faceoff against the Metro-leading New York Rangers at PPG Paints Arena. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens are 7-1-1 on home ice. There's no place like home! 2)On the other hand, the Pens have dropped 3 of their last 5 games. Gimme a W! 3)The Pens have scored just 4 goals in their last 3 games. Crank up the Crue and the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
Here we go, Steelers, here we go! Our Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Cleveland today to battle the Browns in an AFC North showdown. These are your keys for today's game. 1)You may have heard that the Steelers have lost 4 in a row. The Browns have gone 0-10 to start the season. Something's got to give. Gimme a W! 2)Remember former Jeannette standout Terrelle Pryor? The Steelers defense sure should. Back when the Cleveland WR was a QB for Oakland, he gouged the Steelers D on a 93-yard touchdown run en route to an Oakland win a few years back. Now Pryor is the leading receiver on a bad Browns team. He can still beat you, though, so watch out. Hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD! 3)The defense is missing their leader in DL Cam Heyward, out for the year with a pectoral injury. The offense is down to WR Antonio Brown and whoever they can find in the locker room to catch the ball. QB Ben Roethlisberger needs more weapons than AB and RB Le'Veon Bell. Someone, anyone, has to step up. Remember the next man up mantra? Score early, score often, score BIG! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

Buy Sam a drink and get his dog one, too 'cause it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins close out their road trip tonight with the 2nd of a back-to-back set when they faceoff against the Buffalo Sabres. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens pulled out a win last night, 3-2 in OT. Tonight they go for 2 in a row. Last season they were 3-0 vs the Sabres. Overall, they've beaten Buffalo in 9 in a row. Buffalo the Sabres! 2)The Sabres have lost 6 straight. #7 would be heaven! 3)The Sabres are 30th in the league in scoring, averaging just 1.8 goals per game. The Pens are ranked 8th at 2.9 per game. Break out the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

I'm in a New York state of mind 'cause it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins continue their road trip tonight when they faceoff against the New York Islanders. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens try to find the win column tonight following Wednesday's crushing 7-1 loss to the Caps. 7 goals is the most the Pens have allowed in a game this season. We need the D! 2)The number 7 was a common theme Wednesday as the Pens took 7 penalties, too. Stay outta the box and find the net! 3)In that loss, they only scored 1. That just won't get it done. It's all about the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

Great balls of fire, it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road tonight to faceoff against the Capitals in Washington. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens are ranked 3rd in the league on the power play at 25.5%. The Capitals penalty kill is a paltry 24th at 12.5%. Take advantage of the man-advantage! 2)The Pens rank 6th in the NHL in goals per game, averaging 3.1. The Capitals are 8th in goals against, allowing 2.4 per game. Break out the Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)The Pens will have their hands full with the defending President's Trophy winner. Yeah, right. We got the Cup! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
Have you heard the news? It's all over town. Check that. With apologizes to that great American poet, Robert Seger, it's all over Black-N-Gold Nation. That's because it's time for the latest edition of that internet sensation, The Black-N-Gold News. Mrs. Black-N-Gold brings you the latest info on our Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates.
THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
STEELERS
Our Steelers made some roster moves this week. They placed OL Cody Wallace on injured reserve. To replace him, the promoted CB Al-Hajj Shabazz from the practice squad.
The Steelers have been in a funk lately, which has Mrs. Black-N-Gold wondering "What the funk is wrong with our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football team". Last Sunday they lost to the Baltimorons 21-14. In that game, C Maurkice Pouncey left the game with a dislocated thumb on his snapping hand (right). Pouncey had surgery 2 days later to repair his dislocated digit.
More injuries hampered the Steelers. RB DeAngelo Williams underwent surgery to repair his meniscus and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. The Steelers got some good injury news as TE Ladarius Green was activated from the PUP list. In a corresponding move, LB LJ Fort was released.
Both Pouncey and Green were in the lineup for this past Sunday's game against the Cowboys but the funk continued. The Steelers lost their 4th in a row in a shootout, 35-30.
This week the Steelers travel to Cleveland to battle the Browns. Cleveland is 0-10 on the season. Something's got to give in this contest, unless it ends in a tie. Yoi! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
PENGUINS
Our Penguins may not be playing their best hockey yet but at least they're still finding the win column. Last week they concluded their trip out west but shutting out the Sharks 5-0. In that game, F Conor Sheary returned to the ice.
Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team also did some roster shuffling. They sent D David Warsofsky back to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. They also called up D Steve Olesky and Chad Ruhwedel from the baby Pens and sent F Tom Sestito back down.
Sheary's return proved pivotal as they Pens edged Edmonton last week, 4-3. Sheary scored 2 goals in that contest.
The Sestito move ended up being just a paper move. He was re-called the next day and Ruhwedel was sent back to WB/S.
All the moves must have sapped the Pens strength because the lost to the Wild on Thursday 4-2. Fear not, they returned to the win column on Saturday night in a 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs.
The Pens take their show on the road to Washington, DC tomorrow night for a clash with the Capitals. It will be the first game of a 3-game road trip. Let's Go Pens!!!
PIRATES
Our Pirates made a few roster moves, too. They activated Cs Chris Stewart & Elias Diaz, RHs Gerrit Cole & AJ Schugel, and 2B Josh Harrison, all from the 60-day DL.
Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team also added RH Dobydas Neverauskas and OF/1B Jose Osuna to the 40-man roster.
Also, a Pirate received post-season accolades. Congratulations to LF Starling Marte. Marte Partay was awarded his 2nd consecutive Gold Glove for outstanding play in the outfield. We'll see what position he mans next season as he goes for #3. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
In the words of the immortal Myron Cope "Yoi and double yoi!" Another week of football, another Steelers loss. That's 4 straight and our team is not playing great. The Steelers lost in a shootout with the Cowboys yesterday 35-30. Mrs. Black-N-Gold brings you The Good, The Bad & The Ugly from yesterday's game.
GOOD-When you loss 4 in a row, is there really anything good about your team? Well, some players did play well yesterday. QB Ben Roethlisberger was 37 of 46 for 3 touchdowns, 408 yards and a passer rating of 125.4. RB Le'Veon Bell rushed 17 times for 57 yards and a touchdown while catching 9 passes for 77 yards and another TD. WR Antonio Brown had 14 receptions for 154 yards and 1 touchdown. These may help pad their stats but it didn't help put a W in the win column. It doesn't seem like anyone else on the offense is capable of consistently making plays to help sustain drives. It's the Killer Bs and those other guys. And that's about it.
BAD-Man, this defense is bad. And that's not a good thing. Every time there was a good play, they'd give up a big play afterwards. It was the old "1 step forward, 2 steps back" routine. They couldn't get off the field. They allowed Dallas to convert 7 of 13 3rd downs. Everyone knew that Dallas rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott was going to run all over the place and he did with 21 carries for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns (the final nails in the Steelers coffin). He also caught 2 passes for 95 yards, the big blow being the 83 yard TD pass from fellow rookie, QB Dak Prescott. Prescott also connected with WR Dez Bryant 6 times for 116 yards including a 50 yard touchdown. Bottom line, the defense had 42 seconds to defend the field and failed. Every year we hear how the defense is getting faster and will improve and every year we're met with disappointment.
UGLY-This is getting out of hand. It seems like the Steelers find themselves in this situation year in and year out. They won't fire the coaches because that's "not the Steeler way". Will it looks like "the Steeler way" has become inconsistency. The only thing our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team has been able to do consistently is lose. It looks like this team and this organization is a mess. It's a shame that they're wasting Ben's prime years while they try to figure out what to do with this disaster. There will come a time that the Steelers won't have Ben. What will they do then?
At one point this season, we couldn't look at the schedule and be assured of 2 wins against Cleveland. Mrs. Black-N-Gold isn't so sure of that anymore. With Thursday night's win over the Browns (how can we call them Clowns when our own team is so laughable?) the Baltimorons continue to lead the AFC North at 5-4. The Steelers are in 2nd place with a 4-5 record. Cincy plays tonight and sits at 3-4-1. Then there is Cleveland at 0-10. Will they finally find the win column when they face the Steelers on their home turf next week? I pray to Chuck Noll that they do not. We've got to win again sometime. Don't we? Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

SLAP SHOTS
Hallelujah Hollywood, it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins close out their home stand tonight at PPG Paints Arena when they faceoff against the Toronto Maple Leafs. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)It's another matchup between The World's Greatest Hockey Player, C Sidney Crosby, and another heir-apparent, Toronto C Auston Matthews. Sid may have missed the scoresheet in Tuesday's win over Connor McDavid and the Oilers but we still found the win column. Line them up and watch them fall! 2)Our Pens look to get back in the win column following Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Wild. Blow the Leafs away! 3)The Pens are ranked 9th in the league in scoring with a 3.0 average. The Leafs are right in front of them at #8 with 3.1 goals per game. Score early, score often, score BIG Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE SLAP SHOTS
Mrs. Black-N-Gold is smiling like a butcher's dog 'cause it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins continue their home stand at PPG Paints Arena tonight when they faceoff against the Minnesota Wild. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Thanks to Tuesday's 4-3 win over Edmonton, the Pens have won 2 in a row. If it's 3, it's for me! 2)On home ice, the Pens are 6-0-1. There's no place like home! 3)The Pens are 6th in the NHL with a 3.1 goals per game average. They'll have their work cut out for them. The Wild are 1st in the league in goals against, allowing a 2.0 average. Crank up the Crue and the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

TAKEAWAYS
Black-N-Gold Nation has been abuzz with many different topics over the past several weeks. Today, Mrs. Black-N-Gold sits down to give you her takes on 3 things that are on her mind regarding our favorite Black-N-Gold Teams. It's time to catch Toni's Takeaways.
1)PENGUINS-There is no doubt about it in Mrs. Black-N-Gold's eyes. Our Penguins are the best organization in town, maybe in all of professional sports. They recently celebrated their 4th Stanley Cup win. In doing so, they combined youth from their farm system (thank you, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Baby Pens!) with their core players (you know the names: Sid, Geno, Tanger, Flower) and mixed in some wily veterans and some key pieces that they plucked off the trade market. It all added up to a drink with Lord Stanley.
Yes, the NHL has a salary cap, an advantage that some leagues don't have (I'm talking to you, MLB). But year in and year out, Mario & Burkle are not afraid to spend the money that's needed to compete for a championship.
They're also an organization that's not afraid to admit error. Witness last season's dismissal of Head Coach Mike Johnston. Yes, this is not a organization that cuts off its nose to spite its face. And GM Jim Rutherford will pull the trigger on a deal when need be. Watch it, he'll rob you blind. Case in point, Trader Jim's larcenous haul of D Trevor Daley for Rob Scuderi last year. Or how about snagging a 5th round pick for 3rd G Mike Condon last week?
Yep, the Pens certainly have proven that they've got the best game in town.
2)STEELERS-This next take is directed at not only our Steelers but the entire NFL, including the league office. You know how so many people complain that a baseball game takes up to 3 hours? Well what about a football game? The propensity of penalties in the NFL has made the game virtually impossible to watch. Yes, the Steelers need to clean up their act and play more disciplined football but let's see the refs keep the flags in their pockets for a few. It's almost as if there is a penalty on every-other-play. Yoi! Who wants to watch that? No wonder the NFL's ratings are down.
True, the NFL is stuck in a catch-22 by trying to protect players from serious injury whilst producing an entertaining product. I got news for you, Goodell, it isn't working. Mrs. Black-N-Gold certainly doesn't want to see a guy get his block knocked off but she doesn't want to spend a Sunday afternoon watching flags fly, either.
3)PIRATES-The sound of crickets that you hear is coming from our Pirates offices over on Federal Street. You see, MLB free agency just began. It seems unlikely that the Bucs will retain any of their 4 free agents, UTL Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, RH Ivan Nova & RH Neftali Feliz. All 4 have performed their way above what the Pirates would probably be willing to spend.
But wait! You say the Buccos still have plenty of holes to fill on their roster? You are correct. Unfortunately, it looks like another off-season of reclamation projects and dumpster diving. The Pirates are in desperate need of pitching, starting and relieving. However, the free agent crop for starters is thin and those that are available such as the aforementioned Nova stand to command big bucks (punny). Even if the Pirates cull together a decent bullpen, we learned last year that you can't afford to rely too much on your relievers for an entire season. They just won't hold up.
Meanwhile, the Buccos will need to make up for the losses of Rodriguez and Joyce. They got both of those players on the cheap and will surely look to replace them in the same manner.
You know what? Mrs. Black-N-Gold doesn't hear crickets. What she's hearing is the sound of Bottom Dollar Bob counting his millions while the Bucco faithful collectively groan.

Call Arnold Slick from Turtle Crick; it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins return to the home ice of PPG Paints Arena tonight to faceoff against the Edmonton Oilers. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)It's the World's Greatest Hockey Player, Pens C Sidney Crosby against the supposed-heir apparent, Oilers C Connor McDavid. This is the 1st meeting between the two and it promises to be a good one. Slap him silly, Sidney! 2)Both teams are tied for 8th in the NHL at 3.0 goals per game. Rock the Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)The Pens are 6th in the league on the power play with a 24.4% rate. Edmonton ranks 4th in penalty kill at 89.5%. Take advantage of the man-advantage. Man-up! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
Wow. Just wow. For once, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is speechless. Words can't begin to describe the debacle that was the latest Steelers loss yesterday, 21-14 in Baltimore. Normally, she'd give you The Good, The Bad and the Ugly from yesterday's game. There was more than enough bad and ugly to go around. But there was absolutely nothing good about this game. Not. One. Damn. Thing. What started as such a hopeful day on a beautiful afternoon for football turned to garbage in a hurry. Everyone was abuzz thanks to the returns of DL Cam Heyward (whose name I never heard mentioned all day), T Marcus Gilbert (he did the revolving door bit at one point to allow a sack) and QB Ben Roethlisberger (would we really rather have Ben at less than 100% instead of a totally healthy Landry Jones?). No, there will be no Good, Bad & Ugly today. Instead, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is going to provide a laundry list of big moments from the game and see if we can make sense of this mess.
1)Boom! Right off the bat, the Steelers go 3 and out on 1st possession and C Maurkice Pouncey leaves the field with a thumb injury (Pouncey would later return only to leave again).
2)CB Artie Burns, making his 1st NFL start, grabs his 1st career interception. It was also the 1st interception for the Steelers secondary this season. The turnover led to 0 points (this is a trend that developed in the Patriots game).
3)It wasn't all sunshine and flowers for Artie. Burns was burned (punny) along with the rest of the Steelers D by the former one-trick pony Mike Wallace for a 95 yard touchdown. That set a new Baltimore record.
4)The Steelers talked all week about leaning heavily on RB Le'Veon Bell in the game plan. Bell was mostly ineffective, rushing 14 times for 32 yards, a 2.3 average. He also caught 6 passes for 38 yards.
5)Roethlisberger was no better. He completed 23 of 45 passes for 264 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception and a 67.3 passer rating. Ben was so completely off his game, there were times you had to wonder why he was still in the game.
6)The Steelers were a pathetic 4 for 16 on 3rd downs.
7)It looked like P Jordan Berry would be the MVP of the day until his punt was blocked in the 4th quarter for a TD. When this happened, the Steelers were trailing 13-0.
8)The Steelers were flagged 13 times for 99 yards. At one point in the game, the Steelers racked up more yards on penalties then on offense. They had a penalty for every occasion: Delay of game, false start, running into the punter, face mask/hands to the face, neutral zone, pass interference, too many men on the field.
9)With 48 seconds to go, the Steelers had one last chance, trailing 21-14. They lined up for an onsides kick. Keep in mind, they unsuccessfully tried an onsides kick in their loss to New England. Now they're 0 for 2 this season.
10)For some reason, K Chris Boswell, thought he was performing the River Dance like Hines Ward used to do on touchdowns, when he attempted his kick. It fell 2 inches off the tee so he tried a legitimate onsides kick immediately thereafter. Make that another penalty. You can only kick the ball once, Boz.
That about sums up the Steelers dreadful day. The Steelers lost to Baltimore for the 11th time in their last 14 meetings They have now lost to sub-.500 teams, on the road, in 12 of the last 17 games. They have also lost 3 straight games and are now in a tie with Baltimore for the AFC North lead at 4-4 (although Baltimore holds the tiebreaker). Cincy had a bye but they're right behind at 3-4-1. The Clowns are still the Clowns, falling to 0-9 (please, PLEASE, PLEASE, don't let the Steelers lose to Cleveland when we face them!)
Next week the Steelers return home to Heinz Field to face America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas is the best team in the NFC with a 7-1 mark. They're led by a couple of rookies, QB Dak Prescott and RB Ezekiel Elliott. Can the Steelers recover from their latest embarrassing loss and get back in the win column? They'd better if they hope to have a shot at the playoffs. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
Here we go, Steelers, here we go! Our Pittsburgh Steelers return to the gridiron this afternoon for an AFC North division battle in Baltimore versus the Baltimorons. These are your keys for today's game. 1)It's important that the Steelers impose their will on both sides of the ball. We don't like them and they don't like us. Don't make it another game were we go on the road and lose to a sub-.500 team. Batter the Baltimorons! 2)QB Ben Roethlisberger is rumored to return from his knee injury for this matchup. Typically, Big Ben plays very small during his 1st game back from the sidelines. It's important to find the endzone and stay there. Score early, score often, score BIG! 3)The Steelers have lost 3 straight on the Baltimorons turf. They've also dropped 5 of the last 6 to the Baltimorons. The defense needs to channel the Steel Curtain and find their inner-Blitzburgh. They need to get on Batlimorons QB Joe Flacco's case and in his face. They need to sacco Flacco. Hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

SLAP SHOTS
Do you know they way to San Jose; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to San Jose to faceoff against the Sharks. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens came away with a point but still took the loss in OT Thursday night to LA, 3-2. That gives them 4 wins out of the last 5 games. Eat, sleep, win! 2)The Pens look to defeat the Sharks in San Jose for the 1st time since their Stanley Cup triumph. Sink the Sharks! 3)In Thursday's game, C Sidney Crosby scored both goals. The Captain can't do it all by himself (well, maybe he can but it's a team sport). Crank up the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
Has Mrs. Black-N-Gold got news for you. That's right, Black-N-Gold Nation, it's time for another edition of that internet sensation. It's time for Penguins, Steelers and Pirates. It's time for The Black-N-Gold News.
THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS
PENGUINS
Our Penguins are on a roll. They made their first trip of the season across the state to faceoff with the Philly Flyers last Saturday night. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team emerged victorious, edging Philly 5-4. In that contest, both Cs Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin recorded 2 goals each. One of the goals for Geno was the 300th of his career. Congrats, Geno!
The Pens took their show on the road to the west coast on Wednesday. They downed the Anaheaim Ducks 5-1. That game saw the return of D Kris Letang to the lineup. Also, G Matt Murray made his season debut.
Prior to Wednesday's game, GM Jim Rutherford made a trade. Trader Jim sent G Mike Condon to the Ottawa Senators for a 2017 5th round pick.
Unfortunately, last night the Pens failed to find the win column. They did, however, come away with a point. They were edged by LA 3-2 in OT.
Tomorrow night they return to the scene of their Stanley Cup triumph of last spring when they road trip to San Jose. Faceoff for their showdown with the Sharks is set for 10:30pm EST. That's before we turn the clocks back (if they game is still on at 2am EST, do we get an extra hour of Pens hockey?). Let's Go Pens!!!!
STEELERS
Our Steelers have been practicing all week as they come off their bye. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team are gearing up for Sundays road trip. That's right, it's Baltimore week. And it looks like many of the walking wounded could return for the Steelers. DL Cam Heyward, T Marcus Gilbert and WR Markus Wheaton are expected to be available for this AFC North division matchup. QB Ben Roethlisberger and TE Ladarius Green have been practicing, as well. However, it's still not known if either Big Ben or Green will suite up on Sunday. The Steelers need a win to keep the lead in the divsion. Get ready for smash-mouth football. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
PIRATES
Our Pirates made some changes to the coaching staff this week. Kimera Bartee was named OF/Baserunning/1B coach. Joey Cora becomes the INF/3B coach. And former Pirates Tom Prince is now the bench coach. Former bench coach Dave Jauss will remain on staff in another capacity.
The World Series is over, now the offseason heats up. The hot stove will be brewing as players declare for free agency and tenders are offered to players. What will our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team do? Mrs. Black-N-Gold isn't sure. She just hopes the changes to the coaching staff aren't the only significant moves the Bucs make this offseason. Just be sure, that if/when anything happens, Mrs. Black-N-Gold will have you covered. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

SLAP SHOTS
I'd be safe and warm, if I was in LA; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins play the 2nd of back-to-back games tonight when they faceoff against the Kings in LA. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens are back to their winning ways, winning 4 straight. #5 would be great! 2)With last night's 5-1 win over Anaheim, the Pens have scored 10 goals in the last 2 games. Rock the Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)The Kings have been shutout in 3 straight games. Give 'em the goose egg! Let's Go Pens!!!!

SLAP SHOTS
Buy Sam a drink and get his dog one, too; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to the west coast to faceoff with the Anaheim Ducks tonight. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)They may not always be pretty, but the Pens have won 3 in a row. We want more with win #4! 2)The Pens are 4th overall on the power play at a 26.5% clip. Continue to take advantage of the man-advantage. Man-up! 3)The Ducks are 25th in the league in goals per game with a 2.3 per game average. The Pens have moved on up to 18th at 2.7 per game. Break out the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE
It's almost half-time for the NFL season and our Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off their bye week. While they ready themselves for a road trip versus the Baltimorons, Mrs. Black-N-Gold will look at some ups and downs for our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team, thus far. Since the Steelers have a 4-3 record we'll look at 4 ups and 3 downs. Hut, hut!
UP
#1 Despite the myriad injuries, the Steelers sit atop the AFC North. Yes, it's a terrible division this season but they're still the leaders. It's important that they maintain this position in order to help them get a bye and/or a home field playoff game.
#2 The bye couldn't have come at a better time. Word is that some of the injured returned to practice yesterday in anticipation of playing in this week's game (DL Cam Heyward, T Marcus Gilbert, WR Markus Wheaton). There is also hope that QB Ben Roethlisberger, LB Bud Dupree and TE Lardarius Green may see the field soon, if not this week.
#3 RB Le'Veon Bell looks like he's fully recovered from last year's season-ending knee injury. Here's hoping he stays injury-free. And off the weed.
#4 The return of Cam & Ben is sorely (punny) needed. This team goes as Big Ben goes. If he goes down to an injury, the team's playoff chances do, too. The same with Cam the Man and the defense. No doubt about it, #97 drives the defense.
DOWN
#1 The laundry list of injuries exposed the Steelers lack of depth throughout the roster. You can only have so many "next men up". They have to find a way to keep the starters healthy and on the field.
#2 The Steelers definitely need to win their division to keep their playoff hopes alive. They can ill afford any more loses, especially in conference, also. That means more playing down to the level of competition. This team has lost to too many bad teams too many times during the Mike Tomlin Era. If you want to be a Super Bowl contender, you've got to play like a Super Bowl contender. Beat the good teams and beat up the bad teams.
#3 It's been a mixed bag with the rookie crop this season. Some of the youngsters (CB Artie Burns, DL Javon Hargrave, S Sean Davis, LB Tyler Matakevich) have seen game action. The results have been good and bad. You'd think the more reps these guys get, the better they'll get. However, there is also the concern of them hitting the rookie wall. Mrs. Black-N-Gold hopes they kids took advantage of the bye to rest and relax. We'll need them in the 2nd half.
Here's what happened to the rest of the division while the Steelers were off. The Baltimorons got their bye, also. The Bungles kissed their cousins in London with a tie. And Cleveland? They may be rocking in the World Series but Cleveland still sucks in the NFL. The Clowns lost another one.
Now it's time to put on the pads and your game face, too. It's Baltimore week and you know what that means. Kick Baltimoron butt. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
