Play Ball! Those words will ring out at PNC Park today for what is expected to be a standing room only crowd for your Pittsburgh Pirates home opener against the Chicago Scrubs. These are your keys to today's game. 1)Comeback Player of the Year, LH Francisco Liriano, is on the hill for the Pirates. Filthy Frankie was 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA last season for the Bucs. Shut 'em down, Frankie! 2)The Cub have finished under .500 the last 5 seasons. Meanwhile, the Pirates ended 21 years of futility last year when they finished 94-68 and took the St Louie Cardinals to game 5 of the NLDS. It's important for the Pirates to get off to a fast start as they play all of their games versus division opponents for the first month until April 29-30. Bring plenty of Hit, Run, & Score! 3)The Scrubs start RH Jeff Samardzja who was 8-13 with a 4.34 ERA last season. He faced the Bucs on Opening Day last year and tossed 2-hit, shutout ball for 8 innings on his way to a win. Score early, score often, score BIG! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

These are your keys to tonight's game 1)These two teams are eerily similar right now. Both the Pens and Blackhawks are at 99 points in their respective conferences. Winner breaks 100! 2)Both teams are 1-3 in their last 4 games. The Pens need to get back to their winning ways at home! 3)Last time these teams met, on March 1 at Soldier Field, the Blackhawks were 5-1 winners. Return the favor at our house with plenty of Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!

THE BULLPEN

Come Monday at PNC Park, it will be time for your Pittsburgh Pirates to "play ball" as their 2014 season gets under way versus their NL Central rival, the Chicago Scrubs. Fans have anxiously waited all offseason to see if the Pirates can put together back-to-back winning seasons as well as another trip to the postseason. Many were disappointed by the Pirates inactivity during the winter months, not showing any interest in improving the club or the chances at clinching the division this season. However, things looked brighter after this week's extension of LF Starling Marte for 6 years, $31 million, with club options for 2 years. Also, fans eargerly anticipate the arrivals of RF Gregory Polanco and RH Jameson Taillon from Indy. Is it enough to get the Pirates back to the playoffs and, hopefully, a World Series? Mrs. Black-N-Gold takes a look by position.

Pitching-This was definitely the Pirates strong point last season. But A.J. Burnett departed to the cross-state rival Philadelphia Sillies. The Pirates replaced A.J. with RH Edinson Volquez. Volquez hasn't been the same since his All-Star season of 2008, when he went 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA. Last season, he had the highest ERA among eligible NL starters. He's not the only question mark in the starting rotation. Can LH Francisco Liriano repeat last year's NL Comeback Player of the Year performance? Frankie has never put together back-to-back solid seasons but may be motivated to do so considering it's his walk year. Can LH Wandy Rodriguez return to health and his innings-eating form? Will RH Gerrit Cole build upon his fantastic rookie season? Does RH Charlie Morton figure out how to get left handed hitters out and live up to his contract extension? Right now, we hope the answer to these questions is a resounding "Yes". We're looking at a starting rotation of Liriano, Morton, Rodriguez, Cole and Volquez. If anyone should suffer an injury or falter, Taillon isn't the only one waiting in the wings at Triple-A. Then there is the Pirates bullpen. Dubbed the "Shark Tank" last season, these guys feasted on hitters when the Pirates had a lead. The bullpen is anchored by closer Jason Grilli (also in the final year of his contract) and 8th-inning man Mark Melancon. The 1-2 lefty punch of Tony Watson and Justin Wilson return. With RH Bryan Morris assured of making the team, there are still question marks with Jeanmar Gomez, Vin Mazzaro and Stolmy Pimentel. Someone could be released or traded before the final roster is set.

Catcher-The ever-reliable Russell Martin returns for what may be his final season in Pittsburgh. In the offseason, the Pirates acquired light-hitting backstop Chris Stewart to back up Frenchy. However, Stewart begins the season on the DL with a knee. This could be to the Bucs benefit as they'll have Tony Sanchez start the year in Pittsburgh behind Martin. It's a good chance for the kid to soak up as much of Martin's knowledge as he can to get him ready to take over next season. When Stewart is healthy, it's back to Indy for Sanchez where he can play every day. Last season, Martin didn't light up the league with his bat but still managed to come through in the clutch when called upon. And he continues to be one of the best defensive catchers in the game. Stewart is also a defensive gem so imagine the games this pair will call when they get together. And, of course, thou shalt not run on Frenchy!

1B-This position is a BIG question mark for the Pirates. It looks like Gaby Sanchez will get the majority of the starts at first even though he has been horrible against RHs the past few seasons. Andrew Lambo did nothing to win the job in spring training and was sent down to Indy. Non-roster invitee, left-handed hitting Travis Ishikawa will spell Sanchez at first. Although Ishy had a terrific spring, if he were that good, he wouldn't have been a non-roster invitee in the first place. Maybe Lambo can get his head on straight and make it back to the 'Burgh. Or, maybe, GM Neal Huntington will land that ever-elusive everyday first baseman that this team so desperately needs. Until that happens, keep your fingers crossed.

2B-The Pittsburgh Kid, Neil Walker is back to man the bag for the Bucs. Walker had an up and down season last year that was riddled with injuries. If healthy, he has the potential to hit 20 homers and be an offensive weapon for this team. The problem is, some people think he should only be used against RHs. Walker is a switch hitter that works best from the left side of the plate. It makes you wonder if he should be a platoon player. This is the knock on Walker. He's worked this spring on his right handed hitting and I know I've seen him hit lefties. Give the Kid a chance, and he'll show you what he can do.

SS-Jordy Mercer will be the starting, everyday shortstop for the first time in his career. He has the potential for double-digit homers but his defense is suspect. The Pirates are keeping Clint Barmes around as an extra infielder and to help Mercer along with the transition. If Mercer can improve the glovework, his bat should help a lineup that looks woefully deficient in other spots.

3B-All-Star Pedro Alvarez mans the hot corner for the Pirates. Sometimes it's an adventure watching him, both in the field and with the bat. He had a good spring and will try to translate that to a good start for the season, something he, typically does not do. Pedro tied for the NL lead with 36 home runs last year and will work to improve upon that. He's also trying to cut down on the strikeouts and get on base more. He's a big swinger so he'll never go under 3-digits in strikeouts, if he can cut it down to about 150-175, the Pirates will take it.

LF-With the announcement of his contract extension this week, the Pirates look to have Starling Marte as a fixture in left field for years to come. He is looked at as an above-average defensive player with bouts of mental errors. He also is a free swinger in the leadoff spot. If he can stay healthy (not get as many HBPs, perhaps) and work on taking some walks, his on-base percentage can see a definite uptick. He also has the potential for at least 20 home runs. I look for a breakout year and plenty of Marte Partay this season.

CF-Home of the reigning NL MVP. Andrew McCutchen won the award in a down year for him. Look for him to put up bigger and better numbers this year and win back-to-back MVPs.

RF-Another big question mark for the Bucs but only until Polanco gets seasoned at Triple-A. Jose Tabata and Travis Snider will continue to try to hold off Polanco's arrival. While I can't wait to see this stud in front of the Clemente Wall, if he has an extended stay at Indy, that means Snider and Tabata are doing something right.

The bench continues to be a weakness that is ignored by Huntington. There aren't hitters off the bench that can strike fear into an opposing pitching staff. Barmes has been getting some work around the diamond so he can backup more than the shortstop position. Fan favorite Josh Harrison will return. He has some versatility and has been known to get a big hit or two off the bench. Just, please, don't put him in the outfield unless it's a dire emergency.

Manager Clint Hurdle and GM Huntington are in the final year of their contracts. Although the Pirates are expected to pick up both of their options, they have yet to do so. The ship seems to, finally, be righted after all these years. Don't rock the boat by dragging your feet on these deals, Nutting.

Many pundits expect the Pirates to come crashing back to earth this season. The NL Central-winning Cardinals improved too much and the Bucs didn't do enough. Sports Illustrated has them finishing 3rd in the Central behind St Louie & Cincy and 8th overall in the NL. You need to be a top 5 team to reach the postseason. SI says they're good for 83 wins. While I do bleed black-n-gold, I just don't see the Pirates raising the Jolly Roger 94 times like last season. However, I think they can do better than 83. I have the Bucs at 88 wins, battling for a wildcard spot. Like last year, I'd love to see Hurdle and the Bucs prove me wrong and eclipse this mark. While it is a marathon and not a sprint, it is vital to get off to a strong start. Except for 2 games on April 29-30 against Baltimore, the Pirates will face their division rivals the first month of the season. They should capitalize in their first series when they play the Scrubs and work to take as many series as possible. Beating their division opponents consistently is key to winning the division. BLUES N'AT

On Sunday, as Mrs. Black-N-Gold watched her beloved Pittsburgh Penguins drop a 1-0 game to the St. Louis Blues, she got to wondering. Why is the St. Louis hockey team called the "Blues". It just so happens, St. Louis is another mecca of blues music in this great country. It was the "Father of the Blues", W.C. Handy that wrote "St. Louis Blues" in 1914. It went on to become the most recorded and popular blues song in history. Greats such as Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith, Glenn Miller, and Count Basie are a few of the artists that covered this iconic song. St. Louis became a home in the early part of the 20th century for many musicians that followed the Mississippi River up to the Gateway to the West, bringing with them the sound of the Delta Blues. They concocted the St. Louis Blues by merging the Delta style with ragtime, piano-driven music and added a dash of jazz for flavor. What emerged was a sound that still resonates today. Many artists have gone through the Lou to get to stardom, such as Chuck Berry (a native son), Johnnie Johnson, Little Milton and Albert King. They helped lay the foundation for the strong blues tradition that still stands. St. Louis continues to celebrate the blues and their heritage throughout the year. On Memorial Day weekend they host the St. Louis Bluesweek Festival. For a number of years, Friday nights in June, at Jefferson Barracks Park, there would be "Blues on the Mississippi". Labor Day weekend is the Big Muddy Blues Festival. If you're not fortunate enough to catch some of those blues gatherings, there is a host of blues clubs in the area, notably 1860 Saloon, Hammerstone's and BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups. St. Louis may have the Blues, Cardinals, and Rams but they also have The Blues. Mrs. Black-N-Gold may have to take a trip to the Mound City someday and soak up some of this blues scene. Your Pittsburgh Penguins look to get back in the win column tonight as they faceoff against the Phoenix Coyotes at Consol Energy Center. These are your keys to tonight's game. 1)After going 0 for 5 on the power play in Sunday's 1-0 loss to St. Louis, the Pens will welcome Phoenix with open arms. The Coyotes are 27th in the NHL on the penalty kill at 79.6%. Meanwhile, despite Sunday's ineptitude, the Pens remain first in the league on the PP at 24.1%. Take advantage of the man advantage! 2)Good thing the Pens are ranked #2 in the league on the penalty kill at 86%. The Coyotes are 3rd in the NHL on the power play at 20.8%. We need those special teams to be special! 3)The Pens may be 26-6-2 at home this season but they're a mediocre 5-4-1 in their last 10 games overall. It's the opposite for Phoenix. They are a middling 13-14-8 on the road. However, they're 7-3 in their last 10 games. Score early, score often, score BIG with lots of Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!

It's Monday and Mrs. Black-N-Gold has the blues again. "They call it stormy Monday, but Tuesday is just as bad". "Stormy Monday " was written as a twelve-bar blues by the great T-Bone Walker. It was originally titled "Call It Stormy Monday (But Tuesday Is Just As Bad)" to avoid confusion with "Stormy Monday Blues" by Earl Hines from 1942. T-Bone Walker recorded this for Black & White Records with Paul Bass producing. It was released in November 1947. It reached #5 on Billboard's "Race Records" chart, the second-highest charted song for Walker. Through the years, Walker re-recorded the song several times. The Blues Foundation inducted it into the Blues Hall of Fame as a "Classic of Blues Recording-Single or Album Track" in 1983. The song was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for "lasting qualitative or historical significance" in 1991. In 1995, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named it as one of the"500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll". It has been re-recorded by countless musicians. Bobby "Blue" Bland's version, released in 1962, became a hit for the veteran bluesman. The Allman Brothers Band put their stamp on it with a live version on their 1971 double-album "At Fillmore East". Other artists to record one of the most popular blues songs in history include Etta James, Eric Clapton, Latimore, Lou Rawls, and Them (with Van Morrison). B. B. King not only covered this song, but claimed it as an inspiration for his electric guitar playing. T-Bone Walker started the storm and others continue to carry it on. Until next time boys and girls. BLACK-N-GOLD N'AT

Continuing our look at legendary Black-N-Gold broadcasters, Mrs. Black-N-Gold celebrates the one, the only, Pittsburgh Steelers icon Myron Cope. Myron was the only one of the Big Three that was born and raised in Pittsburgh. Myron's career began in print journalism, working freelance for Sports Illustrated, The Saturday Evening Post and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Myron debuted as the Steelers color man in 1970. He was the voice of the Pittsburgh Steelers for 35 years. He also worked the mike for Pitt Panthers football in 1983. Along the way, Myron invented the world-famous Terrible Towel, ultimately giving the rights of the Towel to the Allegheny Valley School to raise awareness and money for the institution. Myron had the distinction of being the longest tenured broadcaster for a team in NFL history. He is also the only broadcaster to be named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Board of Selectors, having remained on the Board for 10 years. Myron was able to work behind the sports desk at WTAE-TV and host a sports-talk show on WTAE-AM during his run with the Steelers. He became the first football announcer inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Realizing his game was slipping, Cope called it quits on June 20, 2005. That same year, he was honored with the Pete Rozelle Award, for his outstanding work behind the mike for the Steelers through the decades. The Steelers also paid tribute to Myron that season during halftime of a game with the Baltimore Ravens. Sadly, we lost Myron on February 27, 2008. But Myron lives on through all of his loyal, Towel-waving listeners. How many of us made a drinking game of the many Myron-isms that he would drop during a Steelers broadcast? Yoi. Drink. Double Yoi. Drink two. I had the pleasure of meeting Myron in person a few times. One time I said to him "Myron, what's your favorite drink?". Myron said to me, "Hm-ha, I love them all." And we all love you Myron. We miss you every Steelers Sunday. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

Great balls of fire! In honor of last night's Penguins victory, today we look at the distinguished career of legendary Penguins broadcaster Mike Lange. Mike was born in Sacramento, CA on March 3, 1948. He got his start behind the mike announcing Western Hockey League games. He joined Pens radio broadcasts for one season in 1974. Mike re-joined the Pens booth and was the play-by-play man on both television and radio for the Pens from 1975-2006. Mike had a cameo in the Jean-Claude Van Damme film, Sudden Death, in 1995. In 2001, Mike was the recipient of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, for his outstanding work in NHL broadcasting. Fox Sports Pittsburgh dumped Mike from Pens television in June, 2006. Wisely, he was signed to do Pens radio broadcasts in August of 2006. Mike has developed quite the repertoire of catchphrases through the years. They are often referred to as "Lang-isms" by the Penguins faithful. Many a fan will turn down the sound on their television to hear Mike belt out "Slap me silly, Sidney" (when Pens C Sidney Crosby lights the lamp) or "He beat him like a rented mule" (when the Penguins fake out a perplexed opponent for a score) or "Elvis has just left the building" (signifying a Pens victory). Mrs. Black-N-Gold even had the distinction of meeting Mike once. As many fans know, Mike is a blues music enthusiast. Many moons ago, I stumbled into Gene's, a famous blues bar on Route 51 in Pittsburgh. Who should I see at the other end of the bar, but none other than Mike Lange. I said to the bartender "Buy Mike a drink and get his dog one, too". He loves the blues and he loves the Pens. Scratch my back with a hacksaw. Let's Go Pens!!!

These are your keys to tonight's game. 1)After dropping two in a row this weekend to Philly, the Pens are anxious to get back in the win column. Fire up the Motely Crue and the Goals, Goals, Goals! 2)Like the Pens, Dallas is coming off a lost weekend. They lost in a shootout to Calgary on Friday, 4-3 and received a 7-2 thrashing in Winnipeg on Sunday. Dallas is also fighting for their playoff lives. Kick 'em while they're down! 3)Last time out, the Pens were blanked in Dallas, 3-0. Time to turn it around! Let's Go Pens!!!

BLUES N'AT

It's St. Patrick's Day and Mrs. Black-N-Gold has the blues, remembering Irish bluesman Rory Gallagher today. He was born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland on March 2, 1948. As a child, Rory and his brother inherited the music gene from their parents who encouraged their musical pursuits. Rory was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who played both acoustic and electric guitar as well as sax, bass, mandolin and banjo. When Rory fell in love with the blues, his 1961 Fender Stratocaster, that he purchased with prize money won in a talent contest, became his primary guitar. Decades later, Fender would honor Rory with a signature model, matching the worn body style of his own Strat. Unable to afford blues records as a young man growing up in Ireland, Rory would listen to the late night signals coming from the Armed Forces Radio Network to hear the sounds of his idols like Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy and Lead Belly. Rory cut his teeth playing in cover bands across Europe but yearned to play the blues. During the '60s Rory formed a band called Taste and got a "taste" of musical success as the band scored gigs opening for Cream and Blind Faith. As the '70s began so to did a productive decade of musical output for Rory as Taste broke up and he established a solo career. In 1971, Melody Maker named Rory their International Top Musician of the Year, beating out Eric Clapton. Although mainstream success eluded him, Rory wasn't interested in the commercial trappings of fame. He even turned down an opportunity to join the Rolling Stones following Mick Taylor's departure. Still, Rory continued to record and tour. He was given the chance to play with some of his childhood idols, including Muddy Waters and Jerry Lee Lewis. As his career progressed, Rory established a loyal, cult-like following that has effected music today. Artists such as The Edge of U2, Slash from Guns 'N Roses, and Queen's Brian May name Rory an influence on their playing and careers. Unfortunately, Rory's solitary life of touring and recording took their toll. In 1995, at age 47, years of drinking caught up with Rory as he received a liver transplant. Ultimately, he developed an infection and passed away on June 14 of '95. Rory's presence is still greatly felt in the musical community. His hometown honored him with a bronze statue of Rory playing his famed Strat.. They also host an annual blues festival in remembrance. And in Cork, Ireland a music library was erected in his name. Rory Gallagher loved to play the blues. Those that have had the honor of hearing him play, either live or via his tremendous catalog of work know that he loved the blues. We're lucky to have known a talent as great as Rory Gallagher. I guess it's the Luck O' the Irish. Till next time boys and girls. Keep It Bluesy!

Slow sports day today. Naturally, this got Mrs. Black-N-Gold thinking that not only have we, as black-n-gold sports fans, been blessed with many outstanding, championship teams. But if you're an oldie but a goodie like me, you've also had the pleasure, at one time or another, of listening to three of the greatest announcers to ever get behind a microphone. I am talking about the fact that Pittsburgh has also been blessed with champion-caliber, award-winning broadcasters: Bob "The Gunner" Prince for your Pittsburgh Pirates, Myron Cope for your Pittsburgh Steelers and Mike Lange for your Pittsburgh Penguins. Today we look at legendary announcer Bob Prince.

Bob Prince was the voice of the Pirates for 28 years. He was dubbed "The Gunner" for his rapid-fire- like delivery in the broadcast booth(there was a rumor it was due to a confrontation with a jealous husband) He wasn't born in the 'Burgh but he did graduate from Schenley High School in Pittsburgh as well as attend the University of Pittsburgh. Although the Gunner did some broadcasting for the Steelers and Penguins, it was his Pirates career that was his claim to fame, calling games for the Bucs from 1948-1975, and, all too briefly, again in 1985. He was behind the mike for the Pirates World Championships in 1960 and 1971. The Gunner also brought the famed "Green Weenie" good luck charm to prominence in Pirates broadcasts. In 1975, KDKA made the mistake of firing the Gunner. Ultimately, they brought him back in 1985, in a limited role due to his failing health. He would stay on until his death in June of that year. The Gunner also worked for ABC's "Monday Night Baseball" for a season as well as the 1965 All-Star Game for NBC. He will forever be known in these parts for his famous "Gunnerisms" such as "Kiss It Goodbye" and "Chicken on the Hill with Will". Bob Prince posthumously received the Ford C. Frick Award by the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986. He was also honored with the Pride of the Pirates Award in 1999 as a lifetime achievement. Today baseball seems to frown upon broadcasters of Prince's ilk. The Jack Bucks and Ernie Harwells have mostly passed on to the Big Ballpark in the Sky. Vin Scully is one of the few contemporaries of Prince's that is still sitting in the press box. I never had the distinction of meeting Bob Prince. The closest I ever came was when I was a little black-n-gold fan. The Gunner shared the same birthday as my brother. Every year my brother would send him a card, wishing the Gunner happy birthday. And the Gunner always would return the favor on the Pirates broadcast that day. They just don't make them like the Gunner, anymore. "How sweet it is" to have had Bob Prince. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

He has been the talk of Pittsburgh for the past 24 hours. He is your Pittsburgh Steelers newest safety and biggest splash (thus far) of free agency. He is Mike Mitchell. Mike Who? Mrs. Black-N-Gold must admit she wasn't familiar with the former Carolina safety so she decided to find out a little more about him. Mike Mitchell is 26 years old (turns 27 in June) and was drafted in the 2nd round, #47 overall, by the Oakland Raiders in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Ohio University. Because the Kentucky native was not invited to the Combine, not many expected him to be drafted at all, let alone on Day 1. During his career, Mitchell has recorded 205 tackles, 7 sacks and 6 interceptions. He joined the Panthers last season on a 1 year deal and achieved career numbers: 14 starts, 74 tackles, 4 interceptions, 3.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. His big season in Carolina could be attributed to the fact that he played on the #2 defense in the NFL. Carolina was second in the league in total yards allowed, rushing yards allowed and points allowed. It is also worth mentioning that it certainly helped his cause having DE Greg Hardy and his 15 sacks and fellow DE Charles Johnson and his 6 sacks. If the Steelers expect Mitchell to put up similar numbers during his tenure in Pittsburgh, they'll need to get after the quarterback and force their opponents into mistakes. Speaking of mistakes, it is also noted that Mitchell led all safeties last season with 18 missed tackles. Plus, he is a bit of a hothead, accumulating over $45,000 in fines last season. Mitchell has even gone as far as to suggest that Commissioner Roger Goodell has targeted him for his transgressions. Mitchell has said that he's been fined over 10 times during his 5 year career. The Steelers just inked Mitchell to a 5 year deal worth $25 million, $5.25 million of it guaranteed. He may want to tone down the attitude and keep his money and his wits about him. Only time will tell if the Steelers and Mike Mitchell are a match made in Black-N-Gold Heaven. We certainly hope so. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

Now that the kickoff to free agency is under way, Mrs. Black-N-Gold looks at the recent changes made by your Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers continue to try to get younger yet they restructured the contracts of many veterans: CB Ike Taylor, WR Antonio Brown, TE Heath Miller, and S Troy Polamalu. Many fans were actually pleased by this as it looks like Miller, Polamalu and Taylor will end their careers in the black-n-gold. Someone who will not retire a Steeler is LB LaMarr Woodley. It became apparent that Woodley was expendable and that the Steelers were going to bite the salary-cap-bullet with him when LB  Jason Worilds accepted the transition tag offer of 1 year for $9.754 million, last week. The restructured deals helped the Steelers get under the cap before the free agency period began.  On the first day of free agency the Steelers did something they failed to do most of last season, they made a splash. They signed former Carolina S Mike Mitchell to a 5 year $25 million contract. Mitchell was originally drafted in 2009 in the 2nd round by the Oakland Raiders out of Ohio University. Playing on a 1 year contract in Carolina, Mitchell enjoyed a career year starting 14 games with 74 tackles, 4 interceptions, 3.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. Mitchell is young, turning 27 in June. He could also be considered immature as he accumulated over $45,000 in fines this past season. He'll need to curb those penalizing tendencies. He'll also need to work on his tackling technique as he led all safeties last season with 18 missed tackles. Now the question is, "Will the Steelers try to retain any of their own"?  They will let S Ryan Clark go, for obvious reasons. They are also expected to allow WR Emmanuel Sanders and DE Brett Keisel to walk. They may try to retain DL Ziggy Hood and/or Al Woods. Although neither has set the world on fire during their careers, if they can be had at the right price, they may keep them for depth. They may also try to keep either Jonathan Dwyer or LaRod Stephens-Howling to help out in the backfield. They may also attempt to retain at least one of their free agent offensive linemen.  And, as of last night, they were trying to get a deal done with WR Jerrricho Cotchery. The Mitchell signing fills a big need but it won't fix everything. It may be the biggest move the Steelers make in free agency but they'll need to make some smart moves come draft time, too. This is one small step on the road back to the Super Bowl. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

These are your keys to tonight's game. 1)Despite their shoddy play of late, the Pens continue to lead the NHL in power play, at a 25.5% clip. The Craps are certainly crappy on the penalty kill, ranking 23rd overall at 80.3%. Take advantage of the man-advantage! 2)Craps C Alex Ovechkin leads the NHL with 44 goals. Meanwhile, Pens C Sidney Crosby continues to lead the league with 84 points. Let's see, Sid won the gold in the Olympics for the 2nd time in a row, while Ovechkin laid an egg in front of his countrymen. Slap me silly, Sidney! 3)The Pens are coming off a 3-2 shootout victory over the Ducks on Saturday night. The Craps also won on Saturday, defeating the Coyotes 3-2. Both teams go for 2 in a row. BLUES NA'T

Yesterday was International Women's Day. Mrs. Black-N-Gold commemorated the event by honoring the women of the blues, past and present, especially the Pittsburgh Women of the Blues. The entire month of March celebrates Women's History Month. To honor the occasion, Mrs. Black-N-Gold and the Big Bossman caught a blues show last night. It just so happened that it featured the "Queen of the Pittsburgh Blues Scene", Jill West and Blues Attack. Jill was kind enough to sit down with Mrs. Black-N-Gold and answer a few questions regarding her illustrious career and the state of the current blues scene. I always like to know the influences of the artists that I enjoy. I feel this is a good way to generate word of mouth for other performers and to turn people on to musicians they may not know. Jill listed Big Mama Thornton, Koko Taylor and Etta James as artists that she admires. She paid homage to these ladies later in the evening, she performed Taylor's "Voodoo Woman" from Jill West and Blues Attack's current CD, "Bootleg Blues". She also broke out James' "Damn Your Eyes", always a crowd favorite. Jill also admires some ladies that continue to produce music today, such as Debbie Davies and Denise LaSalle. I explained to Jill that the first time I saw her perform was about 20 odd years ago at the Blue Note. I asked her how she is able to continue to keep the music and her performance so fresh. She responded that the songs "have to mean something to you and your audience." It helps when guest musicians join the band to add a different flavor to keep it sounding fresh. The last question I asked Jill was "Where do you see the blues going, particularly, the Pittsburgh blues scene?" Jill feels that the audiences that frequent the scene are "small, but mighty". Jill West and Blues Attack have a loyal following that are willing to make the trek from near and far to see the "First Lady of Blues in Pittsburgh" wow the crowds from the Boston Waterfront, to Frank's Pub to Moondog's and beyond. We have seen this band several times and Jill West and Blues Attack never disappoint. Last night, they regaled us with several of their own tunes as well as distinct versions of many blues favorites. A number of these tunes are featured on their latest CD, "Bootleg Blues". Big Mama is a Pittsburgh blues institution. Get yourself a Blues Attack at one of their shows or give a listen to some of their CD's. As guitarist Gregg Krupa likes to say, "If you've got the blues, Jill West is the solution". Today is International Women's Day. This day was founded in an effort to celebrate the historic contributions women have made to our society throughout the centuries, politically, socially and economically. The women who have helped shape blues music should be included in that celebration. Women have been singing the blues since as far back as the 1920's. Pioneers include Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Mamie Smith. In an industry mostly dominated by men, Memphis Minnie stood out not only as a singer but as a songwriter and guitarist. All of these wonderful women took the blues and ran with it. They proved that they were not to be ignored and could stand toe-to-toe with their male counterparts.  These ladies paved the way for the likes of Big Mama Thornton, Laverne Baker and Etta James. Today the blues community is bustling with many marvelous female voices such as Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, Samantha Fish and Beth Hart. These ladies write, play and produce their own music. They have collaborated with each other as well as other performers. Pittsburgh is home to an incredible collection of female blues performers from Barbara Blue to Jill West, Shari Richards, Stevee Wellons, and Miss Freddye. The Pittsburgh blues scene now has Patti Spadaro, Ruby Red, Sweaty Betty and Leigh-Anne Yost carrying the torch. And the list continues to grow. These talented ladies carry on the rich blues tradition in the tri-state area and beyond and can be seen at a blues show near you. Do yourself a favor and see them in action. Until next time, boys and girls. It's time for another geography lesson from Mrs. Black-N-Gold. Question: Where in this country can you find some of the best jazz, dixie land, zydeco and blues music? Why in the heart of New Orleans, LA, of course! New Orleans has a rich musical history to go along with some of the most delicious delicacies in the world. You can take in the sights and sounds that New Orleans has to offer in the French Quarter, on Bourbon Street and at Congo Square while you partake in a po'boy, some gumbo or some cajun entrees. The Big Easy has been home for many legendary performers, most notably, Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, The Meters, The Neville Brothers, and Dr. John. The Crescent City has spawned the New Orleans Blues style as well as Swamp Blues. Significant contributors to these genres include Professor Longhair, Guitar Slim, Slim Harpo and Lazy Lester. While NOLA is famous for their Mardi Gras celebration, there are musical events happening around this city 365 days a year. Two of the more well-known are the world-famous New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival. Don't let the name of the former fool you. There is way more than jazz music to entertain your ears. And the latter provides some the latest and greatest the blues scene has to offer. Some of the happening spots that host live blues music are The Famous Door, Bourbon Street Blues Company, The Spotted Cat, and Chickie Wah Wah. If ever there were another city in the United States that could challenge Memphis, TN as the Home of the Blues, it would be this Midwestern city. Yes, Mrs. Black-N-Gold brings you another geography lesson. What city am I talking about, boys and girls? If you answered, the Windy City, Chicago, IL, give yourself a gold star. Beginning as far back as the early 1900's, aspiring musicians from the south migrated up north towards the Chicago area in hopes of finding their fame and fortune. Or at least, steady work while they plied their craft in the nightclubs, on the street corners and anywhere else they could be heard. Such blues heavyweights as Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf and Willie Dixon honed their craft in Chi-Town. Chicago has been producing major players on the blues scene ever since. These and other blues greats ended up befriending and mentoring the next generation. They included notables such as Magic Sam, Otis Rush and Buddy Guy. They recorded for historic labels such as Chess, Bluebird, and Cobra. A few labels, such as Delmark and Alligator, still exist today and continue to churn out the latest blues offerings. Of course, Chicago is known for more than just the blues. You can undergo retail therapy on Michigan Ave., take in a Cubs game at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, and enjoy Chicago-style pizza and hot dogs. But the blues lover in you will want to check out some of the highly-touted blues nightclubs like Buddy Guy's Legends (keep your fingers crossed that you are in attendance on a night that Buddy himself graces the stage), Kingston Mines, or B.L.U.E.S.  It's been said that you can find live blues here 365 days of the year. Mrs. Black-N-Gold has had the blues lately so she thought she'd try her hand at writing a blues song. This is, by no means, a "Dusty My Broom" or "Sweet Home Chicago". It's not even on a par with "My Ding-a-Ling". It's based on a theme that is typically synonymous with blues music, love gone wrong. Here goes:
