SLAP SHOTS

Let's go hunt moose on a Harley; it's a a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to MSG tonight to faceoff against the New York Rangers. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Following Wednesday night's 5-1 loss to the Blackhawks, the Pens have lost 4 games in a row. I say no, no, no. Find the win column! 2)Scoring 1 goal isn't going to cut it, either. The Pens have to find a way to score early, score often, and score BIG! Gimme, gimme, gimme Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)The Pens need to get back to playing their game. They've got to take charge early and set the pace. Take a bite out of the Big Apple! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Extra, extra, read all about it, The Black-N-Gold News is back in town! That's right, Black-N-Gold Nation, Mrs. Black-N-Gold has returned with all the information. She brings to you all The Black-N-Gold News for our Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates and Steelers.

                                      THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

PENGUINS

Our Penguins continued their March to the Stanley Cup playoffs. C Sidney Crosby led the way. Sid was named NHL 2nd Star of the Week last week. Congrats, Captain!

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton shuffle continues. F Oskar Sundqvist and D Frank Corrado were called up from WB/S. D Derrick Pouliot was sent back to the Baby Pens.

The Pens defeated Buffalo last week, 3-1. Another game, another injury. F Jake Guentzel left the game with a concussion and hasn't return to action since. Get well soon, Guentzel! F Josh Archibald made the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton trip.

The Pens dropped a 2-1 shoutout to the Senators to end their 2-game road trip.

Another move was made. D David Warsofsky was re-called from WB/S. Corrado was sent back down.

The Pens returned home and lost another shoutout on Friday. The Isles edged our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team 4-3. The Pens fell to Philly Sunday night 6-2. Last night, the losses continued for the Pens. They were battered by the Blackhawks 5-1. There are only a half dozen games to go in the regular season. The chance of winning the division and securing home ice is fading fast. They need to get healthy in a hurry and get back in the win column. This means you, Tanger & Geno & Hags & Maatta & Daley & Hainsey & Jake & etc. The Pens take their show on the road to MSG to faceoff against the Rangers tomorrow night. It will be a great day for hockey and a great day for a Pens win. Let's Go Pens!!!!

PIRATES

Our Pirates worked to get their roster down to the 25-man limit and ready for Opening Day at Fenway on Monday. They optioned RH Pat Light to Triple A and assigned RHs Angel Sanchez and LH Jared Lakind to minor league camp.

The cuts continued for our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team. They sent C Elias Diaz and INF Max Moroff to Indy. RHs Brandon Cumpton, Jason Stoffel and Edgar Santana, OF Eury Perez, LH Dan Runzler, 3B Eric Wood and 1B Joey Terdoslavich were assigned to minor league camp.

Also optioned to Triple A Indy were LH Steven Brault and INF Gift Ngoepe. RH Josh Lindblom and INF Jason Rogers were sent to minor league camp.

The chances of 3B Jung Ho Kang playing for the Bucs this season took a hit. Kang's request for a work visa was denied due to his 3 DUIs in South Korea. There is also a rumor that another incident occurred in a "3rd country". It is not known if/when Kang will be permitted a work visa. His status remains in limbo.

Former 1st round pick, OF Austin Meadows, was assigned to minor league camp. This was Meadows' 1st taste of Major League camp and he 21-year-old impressed. It surely won't be his last.

Following abysmal spring training performances, RH Drew Hutchison, the throw-in in the Francisco Liriano salary dump, was optioned to Indy and RH Jared Hughes was released.

The Buccos finished the Grapefruit League with a 19-11-1 mark. They now travel to Montreal to battle the Blue Jays in exhibition games on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. They still have 31 players on the roster. They need to trim that to 25 by the end of the weekend. Mrs. Black-N-Gold will have her Pirates preview for you this weekend, too. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

STEELERS

Our Steelers actually made some free agent signings within the last week. Nothing earth-shattering, just some depth pieces. They signed former Jacksonville 1st round pick, DL Tyson Alualu, fromer KC RB/return man Knile Davis and former Giants DB Coty Sensabaugh.

Our Favorite Black-N-Gold now gets ready for OTAs, the draft and locking up RB Le'Veon Bell to a long-term deal. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

SLAP SHOTS

Scratch my back with a hacksaw; it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins battle the Chicago Blackhawks tonight at PPG Paints Arena. Mrs. Black-N-Gold is back from her road trip and she's back with her keys for tonight's game. 1)Following Sunday's 6-2 loss to Philly, the Pens have dropped 3 in a row. Gimme a W! 2)The Pens continue to look like the Walking Dead, or at least the Walking Wounded as they lose player after player to injury. Thanks to the Pens, business is boomin' for UPMC. The sooner the injured players return, the better. Get healthy in a hurry! 3)March came in like a lion for the Pens. Back on March 1, they traveled to Chi-town and were battered by the Blackhawks 4-1. That won't get the job done. Rock the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

SLAP SHOTS

Hallelujah Hollywood; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to Ottawa tonight to faceoff against the Senators. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)With Tuesday night's 3-1 win over the Sabres, the Pens have won 3 in a row. They continue to lead the league in goals per game with a 3.5 average. During the streak, the Pens have put 13 pucks on the net. It's all about Goals, Goals, Goals! 2)The Pens lost another player Tuesday night when rookie F Jake Guentzel was knocked out of the game with a concussion. Get well soon, Jake. Next man up! 3)The Pens punched their ticket to the playoffs but at 46-17-9 with 100 points, they're still 1 point in back of Washington for the top spot. Normally, the President's Trophy is more ceremonial than anything (just ask the Caps) but it would be key for the Pens to win the top seed and let Washington & Columbus beat each other up in the 1st round. The March to Lord Stanley's Cup continues. Gimme a W! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BULLPEN

On Friday, Mrs. Black-N-Gold & Brother Black-N-Gold are Florida-bound. We head on the road to Clearwater to watch our Pittsburgh Pirates battle the Philadelphia Phillies at Spectrum Field on Saturday (Mrs. Black-N-Gold refuses to give Bottom Dollar Bob anymore money until he puts it back into the team and not his pocket). To get ready for the trip and to get all of Black-N-Gold Nation ready for another season of baseball from the Pittsburgh Baseball Club, here are some things that we're looking forward to seeing on our journey (in no particular order).

1)The new outfield alignment of LF Gregory Polanco, CF Starling Marte and RF Andrew McCutchen. As Mrs. Black-N-Gold typed these words, she almost typed "CF" for Cutch. Oops! That will take some getting used to for both #22 and the fans. The New, Improved Outfield of Dreams!

2)Will UTIL Adam Frazier be SRod 2.0? Fraz has been working on his defense this offseason, looking to boast his value to the team. We already no what he can do atop the batting order based on last season's audition. Maybe manager Clint Hurdle can plug him into the lineup 4 to 5 times a week to spark the offense. Mrs. Black-N-Gold feels that Frazier can do for the Bucs what Josh Harrison did in his super-sub All-Star season of 2014.

3)It will be good to get a look at 1B Josh Bell and see where he is. Remember, he got a late start to spring training due to knee surgery. Has he caught up with his bat? And how's the defense over at 1B?

4)We know that RHs Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon and Ivan Nova are inked in as starters 1-3 for the rotation. How about #s 4 and 5? It looks like RH Chad Kuhl will be the 4th starter. Meanwhile, RHs Tyler Glasnow and Drew Hutchison and LH Steven Brault have been battling for the final spot. No one is running away with the job. Mrs. Black-N-Gold predicts that Glasnow will start the season in Indy to work on his off-speed stuff and control. It will come down to whether the Bucs want a lefty in the rotation (Brault) or whether Bottom Dollar Bob wants his $2 million man in the rotation (Hutch).

5)In years' past, the Bucco bullpen was a strength of the team. This year? Maybe not so much. LH Tony Watson, LH Antonio Bastardo and RH Jared Hughes have all had struggles this spring. All 3 are being counted on to bring stability to the 'pen. Watson will start the season as the closer but if he continues to wrestle with the role, what will happen?

6)The battle for bench spots has heated up, especially with the emergence of 1B/OF Jose Osuna. The legal/visa issues for 3B Jung Ho Kang may open another spot on the bench. With the Buccos scheduled to start the season with an inter-league series at Boston, they'll need a DH in the lineup. Why not go with Osuna, the team leader in HRs & RBIs this spring?

7)Beach & Baseball!

Mrs. Black-N-Gold will report back to you when she returns next week. The season is less than 2 weeks away. Play Ball! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

SLAP SHOTS

I'll be cow-kicked; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins shuffle off to Buffalo to faceoff against the Sabres tonight. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Thanks to Sunday's 4-0 shutout of Florida, the Pens have won 2 in a row. If it's 3, it's for me! 2)During this mini-win-streak, the Pens have scored 10 goals. Keep rockin' the Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)A win tonight will punch the Pens ticket to the playoffs for the 11th consecutive season. Next stop, Lord Stanley's! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Extra, extra, read all about it! The Black-N-Gold News is back in town. That's right, Black-N-Gold Nation, it's time, once again, for that internet sensation. Mrs. Black-N-Gold has all The News for you on our Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates and Steelers.

                                     THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

PENGUINS

The March to the playoffs is well underway for our Penguins. Unfortunately, as the wins mount, so are the injuries. F Carl Hagelin was the latest member of the walking wounded. He is expected to miss approximately 4 weeks with a lower-body injury. Get well soon, Hags!

The Pens dropped their last game on the Western Canada portion of their road trip. However, they were able to get  point out of it when Calgary clipped them 4-3 in a shootout Monday night/Tuesday morning. Did they escape the Great White North with no more injuries? No such luck. D Mark Streit left the contest in Calgary with a lower-body injury. No word yet on the extent of said injury. Get well soon, Streit!

Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team had to call in more reinforcements from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. They recalled F Josh Archibald from the Baby Pens. Speaking of Baby Pens, free agent Zach Aston-Reese was recently signed out of Northeastern, averaging more than a point a game during his NCAA career. He received a 2-way, entry-level contract and will join WB/S immediately.

The Pens road trip ended with a thud. They were shutout, 4-0, in Philly Wednesday. They also may have lost D Ron Hainsey in the process. Yes, another player left the game due to injury. No word yet on his status. Get well soon, Hainsey!

The Pens must be getting healthy, though. They sent Archie & Sunny back to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Thursday. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton-Pittsburgh connection continues, the Pens called up D Derrick Pouliot again.

Coach Sully announced that Hainesy is week-to-week. Meanwhile, C Evgeni Malkin missed Friday's game with an upper-body injury. Get well soon, Geno!

Friday night saw another game, another possible Pens injury. F Conor Sheary left the 6-4 win over New Jersey when he was hit in the face by a puck. No doubt about it, the Pens are having a run of tough luck. Sheary was able to return from the game and assist on C Sidney Crosby's 2nd goal of the game.

Sid and the Kids (Fs Jake Guentzel and Conor Sheary) continued their hot play yesterday. Sid had a hat trick and his lieutenants assisted on all 3 goals en route to a 4-0 shutout of the Florida Panthers. G Marc-Andre Fleury notched the shutout.

The Pens are 45-17-9 with 99 points, 1 point behind both Washington and Columbus for the division lead. The Captain now leads the league with 80 points (along with some kid named McDavid) and 40 goals.

The Pens take their show on the road to Buffalo Tuesday night. A win on Tuesday punches the Pens ticket for the playoff for the 11th straight season. Let's Go Pens!!!!

PIRATES

Our Pirates made the first cuts of the spring. They assigned LH Cody Dickson, LH Tyler Eppler, C Jin-De Jhang and SS Kevin Newman to minor league camp. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team also optioned RHs Clay Holmes and Nick Kingham to Triple A Indy.

The Bucs made some more cuts when they optioned RH Dovydas Neverauskas and assigned OF Barrett Barnes and C Christian Kelley to minor league camp, too. They also optioned INF Chris Bostick to Triple A Indy & assigned INF Erich Weiss to minor league camp.

Still no word on 3B Jung Ho Kang and his visa issues.

Opening Day is 2 weeks away. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

STEELERS

Free agency kicked off recently. Our Steelers have been entertaining some potential signees. They hosted former Jacksonville CB Davon House (while House was in the house on the South Side, he agreed to a deal with the Packers on his cell phone), former Buffalo WR Justin Hunter, former Packers LB Jayrone Elliott (who ultimately re-signed with Green Bay) and former Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower. No word yet on any signings from that group. Mrs. Black-N-Gold will continue to keep you abreast of the situation and let you know if/when our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team signs anyone. Hunter ended up inking a deal with the Steelers for 1 year.

The Steelers former 1st round pick, LB Jarvis Jones, has taken his talents to Steelers West. Jones signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

On the injury-front, RB Le'Veon Bell underwent core muscle surgery to repair the groin injury that was suffered during the playoffs. He may not be ready for OTAs but should be ready for training camp. Get well, Bell!

Now the Steelers get ready for the draft. The NFL will convene in Philly April 27-29. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

SLAP SHOTS

Shave my legs with a rusty razor; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins faceoff against the Florida Panthers this afternoon in a matinee at PPG Paints Arena. These are your keys for today's game. 1)After Wednesday night's shutout, the Pens found the net and the win column Friday night with a 6-4 win over New Jersey. Goals, Goals, Goals, baby! 2)The Panthers boast the league's best penalty kill at 86%. The Pens power play is ranked 3rd at 22.5%. Take advantage of the man-advantage. Man-up! 3)The Pens continue to have the best home record in the NHL at 28-4-3. There's no place like home! Let's Go Pens!!!!

Our Pittsburgh Penguins continue the March to the playoffs tonight when they return to the home ice of PPG Paints Arena to faceoff against the New Jersey Devils. Crank up the Crue and Goals, Goals, Goals! 3)Of course the shutout also means the Pens #3 ranked power play was shutout, as well, going 0 for 2. That just won't do. Take advantage of the man-advantage. Man-up! Lets Go Pens!!!!

SLAP SHOTS

Michael, Michael, motorcycle; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins close out their road trip tonight when they phaceoff against the Flyers in Philly. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pens suffered a 4-3 loss in a shootout with Calgary on Monday. But, hey, they come back east with 7 out of a possible 8 points on that Western Canada road trip. That's not a bad problem to have. Unfortunately, with D Mark Streit's injury in that game, they suffered yet another injury. Get healthy in a hurry! 2)Now, the Pens have one more game before they return home. That game is tonight on the other side of the state with their cross-state rivals. Need I remind you that we don't like them and they don't like us. The Flyers are sinking like a stone and falling further and further out of playoff contention. They'll be looking to take their anger out on the Pens tonight and try to knock us around.  Ph*ck Philly! 3)Philly is 24th in the NHL in goals against, allowing 2.9 per game. The Pens continue to power their way to the top of the standings in goals per game with a 3.5 average. Gimme, gimme, gimme Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

SLAP SHOTS

Great balls of fire; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins continue the road show tonight when they faceoff against the Flames in Calgary. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Thanks to Saturday night's shutout in Vancouver, a 3-0 win, the Pens have won 5 straight. Get your kicks with win #6! 2)C Matt Cullen has been out the past 2 contests and F Carl Hagelin missed the Vancouver matchup. That gives the Pens 7 regulars out due to injury. We need to get healthy in a hurry. Next man up! 3)The Pens have put the puck on the net a total of 22 times during their win streak. Fire up the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Start spreading the news! That's right, Black-N-Gold Nation! Mrs. Black-N-Gold has all the information. She's back to give you the latest low-down on our Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates and Steelers. She's back to give you The Black-N-Gold News.

                                            THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

PENGUINS

There is less than 20 games left in the regular season for our Penguins. They jockeying for playoff position is under way. Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team staged a dramatic, come-from-behind win on home ice on Sunday night, beating Bylsma & Buffalo 4-3.

Injuries continue to plague the Pens. D Kris Letang is still MIA with an upper body injury. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to Pittsburgh bus line is still shuffling back and forth. The Pens recalled F Tom Sestito and D Cameron Gaunce from the Baby Pens. They sent D Derrick Pouliot back to WB/S.

On Wednesday, the Pens began a big 5-game road trip in Winnipeg with a 7-4 win. Unfortunately, F Patric Hornqvist missed this contest. It was announced that he has a concussion. Also, Sestito received a boarding call during the course of the game that resulted in a 4-game suspension for the big guy. The Pens called up F Oskar Sundqvist from WB/S the next day.

The Pens remained in the win column in dramatic fashion on Friday with a 3-2 shootout win in Edmonton. Then they went out and shutout Vancouver last night, 3-0. C Matt Cullen has missed the last 2 contests while F Carl Hagelin missed last night's matchup. That gives the Pens 7 regulars out of the lineup with injuries. Get well soon, Cully and Hags!

Next, the Pens continue their road show tomorrow night in Calgary to face the Flames. They then end the road trip in Philly on Wednesday. The Pens are all alone in 2nd place in the Metro with 94 points, just 1 point out of the top spot held by Washington. There are 15 regular season games to play. Keep on PUCKN! Let's Go Pens!!!!

PIRATES

Another Pirates player will participate in the World Baseball Classic. 2B Josh Harrison was named to Team USA.

Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team will play the St Louie Cardinals in Williamsport, PA on August 20. This game will be played in conjunction with the Little League World Series. It will take place at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field, minor league baseball's 3rd oldest ballpark.

Some news on 3B Jung Ho Kang. The Bucs placed him on the restricted list. There is speculation that his visa issues should be resolved soon, freeing him to join the team in Bradenton for spring training. However, there is still the possibility of discipline by the league and the Buccos.

The Buccos spring training record is an impressive 11-4. Of course, winning the Grapefruit League doesn't guarantee you a trip to the postseason come October. Mrs. Black-N-Gold views this with caution optimism. The real season starts April 3. Get to BUCN! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!
STEELERS
The offseason really kicks into high gear for our Steelers now. The Combine is over and free agency has just begun. Well, officially, the free agent period began Thursday at 4pm. Our Favorite Black-NGold Football Team made $1.797 million offers to 2 of their restricted free agents, OL Chris Hubbard and CB Ross Cockrell. The Steelers would have the option to match any offers Hubbard and Cockrell receive. If they don't match the offers, they would be awarded a 4th round pick for Cockrell but nothing for Hubbard since he was signed as a free agent.
The Steelers are also in danger of losing some of their unrestricted free agents: LBs Lawrence         Timmons and Jarvis Jones, DL Ricardo Mathews, S Shamarko Thomas, QB Landry Jones, RB DeAngelo Williams, TE David Johnson, OL Cody Wallace, and WR Markus Wheaton.

Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey and his brother, Miami C Mike Pouncey, scored a victory of sorts in the civil lawsuit that was brought against them. The litigation stemmed from an incident several years back in Miami. The case was settled for a nominal fee.

Lo and behold, the start of free agency saw the Steeler retain two of their free agents, so far. They re-signed Johnson and Jones to 2 year contracts. The Steelers also released RB Karlos Williams. Meanwhile, Wheaton signed with the Bears. The Steelers also said goodbye to Timmons who agreed to a 2 year deal with the Dolphins.

If/when more deals develop, Mrs. Black-N-Gold will keep pass the info along to you. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

SLAP SHOTS

MALKIN: THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND

Our Pittsburgh Penguins have less than 20 games remaining in the regular season. They're battling for playoff position in the tough Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. Many players have had a hand in helping the Pens defend their Stanley Cup championship. Of course, there is the stuPENSdous play of C Sidney Crosby, who is challenging for the scoring title and could be on his way to another MVP award. There is also the Norris-worthy play of D Justin Schultz. G Matt Murray should be in consideration for the Calder Trophy for league Rookie of the Year. These are just a few of the players who have exhibited outstanding play throughout the season. However, Mrs. Black-N-Gold feels there is one player who has helped put the team on his back and deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Crosby, Conner McDavid and Patrick Kane. That man is Evgeni Malkin.

Mrs. Black-N-Gold has never hid the that Geno is my homeboy. Yes, Mrs. Black-N-Gold owns a pair of #87 earrings but her Pens jersey says "Malkin" on it. While others were running around with Sid and Fleury and Letang shirts, Mrs. Black-N-Gold put her hard-earned, cold cash down on #71. I'm a Geno girl through and through and I'll tell you why.

I was going to call this piece "Ode to Geno" but the word "ode" means poem. Mrs. Black-N-Gold started a poem that went "Oh Geno, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind". Not very original, is it? And Geno deserves better because he is a true original. Let me tell you why.....

The Penguins drafted Evgeni Malkin with the 2nd overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Russia. Due to obligations to his Russian team, Malkin didn't make his Black-N-Gold debut until September 20, 2006. But once his NHL career began, there was no stopping him. Geno began his career by scoring in each of his first 6 games, setting a modern NHL record. From there, the Russian Bear just got better, winning the Calder Trophy for best rookie performance. Apart from Mario Lemieux, Geno is the only other Penguins player to win the award. Throughout his prestigious career he's also won the Art Ross Trophy, twice, as the NHL points leader. He won the Conn Smythe for most valuable player during the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs. He's got a Hart Trophy and a Ted Lindsay award on his resume. Geno has all been named an NHL 1st team All-Star 3 times in his career. He serves as a Penguins alternate captain and has helped the team win 2 Stanley Cups.

At 30 years old, you'd think the big Russian would be winding down, but that's not Geno's style. He's still producing at a prolific pace. For the season, he's tied for 2nd in the league with 70 points. He's connected on 31 goals and 39 assists. He's powerful on the power play as well, with 10 goals and 12 assists with the man-advantage. In his last 6 games, he's put up 10 points, 6 goals and 4 assists. #71 has helped stake the Pens to a 41-16-8 mark, good for 90 points and 2nd place in the ultra-competitive Metro Division. Yes, Malkin is on a mission to make more milkshakes and lead the Pens to a 2nd consecutive Cup.

What do all the numbers add up to? It must be at least 101, as in the fact that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and his boys left Geno off he NHL 100, in honor of the league's 100th anniversary. Really? You have the audacity to omit a sure-Hall of Famer like Geno from your 100 best players? He also puts his fellow countryman, Alex Ovechkin, to shame. That's O-vechkin. Same as 0 Stanley Cups. That's why Evgeni Malkin is, and always will be, The Man, The Myth, The Legend. Go, Go, Geno! Let's Go Pens!!!!

Let's go hunt moose on a Harley; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins take their show on the road to Winnipeg tonight to faceoff against the Jets. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Following Sunday's come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Buffalo, the Pens have won 2 straight. If it's 3, it's for me! 2)The problem with Sunday's thrilling win is that now the Pens have to pack up their bags and jet to Winnipeg, a tough team in a tougher environment. This is a big, physical team that gave the Pens fits in their last matchup. Keep your head on a swivel and stay on your game. Be aware and be fast. They can't hit what they can't catch. Beware the trap game! 3)The Jets are 27th in the league in goals against, giving up 3.1 per game. The Pens are still tops in the NHL in goals per game at 3.5. Break out the Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!

Scratch my back with a hacksaw; it's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Our Pittsburgh Penguins battle Buffalo tonight at PPG Paints arena when former coach Dan Bylsma and his Sabres come to town. THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Extra! Extra! Stop the presses! Mrs. Black-N-Gold has all the latest news for you. She's got all the information for Black-N-Gold Nation, featuring the latest happenings for our Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates and Steelers. May I present to you The Black-N-Gold News.

                                     THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

PENGUINS

The injuries continue to pile up on our Penguins. D Trevor Daley ended up among the walking wounded this week. Daley had knee surgery and is expect to miss 6 weeks. Get well soon, Dales! Then it was announced that D Kris Letang would be day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Get well soon, Tanger! Perhaps in response to this injuries, GM Jim Rutherford cut a trade for a defenseman. He traded away a 2017 2nd round pick and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton F Danny Kristo to Carolina for 12-year veteran Ron Hainsey.

Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team defeated the Philly Flyers at Heinz Field Saturday night in the Stadium Series 4-2. Tanger missed that contest. Pens fans will also be happy to know that Philly D Brandon Manning was suspended for 2 games by the NHL for his high hit on F Jake Guentzel in that game.

In anticipation of the NHL trade deadline, the Pens waived F Eric Fehr. Perhaps it was to clear some cap space for a deadline deal. He ended up clearing waivers.

No deals were made prior to Tuesday night's 3-2 loss in Dallas but the defense certainly could have used some help. In a move that may or may not have been related to the deadline, the Pens recalled D Derrick Pouliot from the Baby Pens.

GM Jim Rutherford did make some deadline deals. Trader Jim sent Fehr, D Steve Oleksy and a 2017 4th round pick to Toronto for D Frank Corrado. GMJR also sent a 2018 4th round pick to Tampa Bay to land D Mark Streit. G Marc-Andre Fleury, the subject of extensive trade speculation all season, was not traded and will play out the rest of the year with the Pens.

Corrado was assigned to WB/S. The Pens also sent D Cameron Gaunce back to the Baby Pens. The moves did not pay immediate dividends as the Pens were upended in Chicago 4-1.

The Pens got back home and got back in the win column last night, defeating Tampa Bay 5-2. They look for another home win tomorrow night when they battle former coach Dan Bylsma and his Buffalo Sabres. 19 games to go in the regular season. Keep on PUCKN. Let's Go Pens!!!!

PIRATES

Grapefruit League action is now under way for our Pirates. In anticipation of the regular season, Manager Clint Hurdle declared over the weekend that RH Gerrit Cole will be the Opening Day starter on Monday, April 3 at Fenway Park versus the Red Sox. RH Jameson Taillon will start the 2nd game. No starter has been announced for the final game of that series. However, RH Ivan Nova will get the start for our Favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team in the home opener against the Atlanta Braves on Friday, April 7.

3B Jung Ho Kang was sentenced in his native South Korea for his December DUI, his 3rd DUI since 2009. Kang received an 8-month suspended sentence as well as 2 years probation. He's free to join the Bucs in Bradenton for spring training. However, he may still face discipline from MLB and/or the Pirates. There is also the matter of treatment for his alcohol addiction. And there is still the sexual assault accusations levied at him last June in Chicago. Mrs. Black-N-Gold will bring you more news as it develops.

We're less than a month away from Opening Day. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

STEELERS

Our Steelers were awarded a 3rd round compensatory pick by the NFL (pick #105) in this year's draft. That gives our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team a total of 9 picks.

In Steelers legal news, C Maurkice Pouncey and his twin brother Mike, a Dolphins offensive lineman, will go to trail in a civil lawsuit on March 6. The litigation stems from a 2013 incident that occurred in Miami.

The Steelers placed the exclusive franchise tag on free agent RB Le'Veon Bell. Now they will try to sign LBell to a long-term contract. The price tag for running backs that receive the franchise tag is $12.2 million for this season. The "exclusive" part means that Bell cannot negotiate with other teams. The Steelers have until July 15 to sign #26 long-term. Otherwise, he has to play out the season on the 1-year franchise deal.

The Steelers also signed WR Antonio Brown to a 5-year contract. The deal will make AB the highest paid receiver in the league.

The Steelers reached an agreement with LB James Harrison, too. Deebo re-signed with the team for a 2 year deal.

GM Kevin Colbert held a press conference leading up to the NFL Combine this week. During the presser, Colbert announced that all of the Steelers coaches will return next season, including much-maligned OLB Coach Joey Porter. We'll see how that pans out as next season progresses. Once the Combine is done, the Steelers will gear up for the draft and before you know it, it's time for OTAs.

As the draft approaches, the Steelers may want to take an offensive lineman or two following the announcement that Ryan Harris has retired. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

SLAP SHOTS

Buy Sam a drink and get his dog one, too; it's a great day for hockey! Our Pittsburgh Penguins continue their road show tonight in Chicago when they battle the Blackhawks. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Our Pens look to get back in the win column following last night's 3-2 loss in Dallas. The Pens went into the 3rd period with a 2-0 lead only to allow 3 unanswered goals in the final period. You got to know when to hold 'em! 2)Sloppy play and lack of defense led to last night's loss. Clean it up! 3)Of course, scoring only 2 goals doesn't get your very far, either. Gimme Goals, Goals, Goals! Let's Go Pens!!!!
