THE BULLPEN

On the road again! Our Pittsburgh Pirates get outta tahn for their final road trip of the season. They open their final series in St Louie tonight against the Cardinals. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pirates home schedule ended last night when the game was washed out after 6 innings, with a 1-1 tie to the Cubs. Now the Bucs steer the ship towards St Louie. Although the Pirates playoff hopes have been dashed, St Louie is still alive. They're 1 game back in the wild card with 3 games to play. Wouldn't it be fun to knock St Louie out of the postseason? Deck the Cards! 2)RH Tyler Glasnow, 0-1, 4.91 ERA gets another chance to impress tonight. He'll face St Louie RH Carlos Martinez, 15-9, 3.15 ERA. The rookie, Glasnow, goes for his 1st MLB win. Gimme a W! 3)St Louie is a team that, typically, takes advantage of opportunities. If the Pirates want to win, they've got to one-up the Cards. Score early, score often, score BIG; Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

One, two, three strikes you're out at the old ballgame! Our Pittsburgh Pirates close out their home schedule for the 2016 season tonight at PNC Park when they clash one last time with the Chicago Cubs. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Break up the Bucs. The Pirates, finally, found the win column with an 8-4 victory over the Cubs last night. They'll need to win out if they want to avoid a losing season and go 81-81. Mrs. Black-N-Gold always worries that the next losing season will be the first of 21 straight losing seasons. Refuse to lose! 2)When last we saw young RH Jameson Taillon last night, he was receiving the hugs not drugs treatment in the dugout, on his way to a win with a 7-1 lead. The bullpen tried to give this one away but hung on 8-4. You got to know when to hold 'em! 3)Considering the aforementioned bullpen meltdown, it's always best to remember this mantra: There's always room for more Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Root, root, root for the home team! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series with the Chicago Cubs tonight at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)How do you go on? The Pirates were officially eliminated following last night's 6-4 loss to the Cubs. Another day, another win given away with 5 games left to play. Fear not, Black-N-Gold Nation. Mrs. Black-N-Gold is in it till the end. She just wishes the Bucs were, too. Stop SUCKN and start BUCN! 2)Things won't get any easier for the Buccos tonight. They face RH Jake (I don't do steroids) Arrieta. You remember Jake, don't you? Pirates players probably still have nightmares about him in that Wild Card game last year. Even Sean Rodriguez wakes up in the middle of the night, looking for a Gatorade cooler to pummel. Manager Clint Hurdle has been hesitant to go all in with a youth movement to see what these kids have. One kid that better start tonight is Josh Bell. Fake Jake has yet to get JBell out in his young career. Ring his bell. Hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD; Hit, Run, & Score! 3)RH Jameson Taillon starts for the Buccos. Here's one last chance to impress management and show that you should be a part of next season's starting rotation. Find the win column and raise the Jolly Roger! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

Well, Black-N-Gold Nation had to know that our Pittsburgh Steelers weren't going to go undefeated this season, didn't they? But Mrs. Black-N-Gold doesn't think anyone, including our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team, expected to lose in the manor in which they did on Sunday, a 34-3 drubbing at the hands of the Philthedelphia Iggles and their rookie QB Carson Wentz. Just like the Steelers, we'll want to wash this loss off but first, Mrs. Black-N-Gold brings you The Good, The Bad and The Ugly from Sunday's defeat.

GOOD
Believe or not, there is some good to come from this loss. Actually, there are two good things. 1st of all, the loss was outside of the conference. And don't forget, the Bungles and Baltimorons also have to play Philly. 2nd is that there is help is on the way. That's right, RB Le'Veon Bell is back this week from suspension and should be raring to go.

BAD
Now that Mrs. Black-N-Gold is done being optimistic, it's time to look at all that was bad about this game. Let  Mrs. Black-N-Gold count the ways. Chiefly, the Steelers were flat-out out-coached and out-played. They failed to impose their will on either side of the football. They looked totally unprepared. Missed tackles and multiple penalties maligned this team. An effective Ben Roethlisberger behind a constantly collapsing offensive line and no run game, at all. Whereas the offense can look forward to LBell's return to help them right the ship, who/what can help this defense? It will be especially bad if many of the players injured during Sunday's game (LB Ryan Shazier, LB Lawrence Timmons, S Robert Golden) are unable to return this week.

UGLY
Things could  real ugly real quick  following this game. The Steelers could face the same with KC this week and beyond if adjustments aren't made. Philly gave the league the blueprint to beat the Steelers. And keep in mind, Philly's head coach, Doug Pederson, was the OC at KC last season. The Steelers were also beaten at KC last year, although Landry Jones was the QB in that game. Also, KC has a big, physical tight end in Travis Kelce. Big, physical tight ends are the Steelers Achilles heal. And with still just 1 sack in 3 games, maybe it's time the Steelers consider blitzing the QB a little.

And now a peak at the standings. Don't look now but the Baltimorons sit all alone atop the AFC North at 3-0. So many people were writing off the Baltimorons but there they are. The Steelers are next with a 2-1 record. The Bungles follow at 1-2. And bringing up the rear is the Cleveland Clowns with an 0-3 mark. The Steelers look to get back in the win column Sunday night at Heinz Field when they face the KC Chiefs. Time to dust ourselves off and get back to the drawing board. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Batter up! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their final home series of the season tonight with the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Someone call the postman because the Pirates are mailing it in again. Not only did they allow the Nats to celebrate their NL East title on home turf, now they've let the NL Central-winning Cubs boast of winning their 100th game at PNC Park. It was not pretty, either in the 12-2 clobbering. Please always remember and don't ever forget, we will always need more Hit, Run, & Score! 2)Not only have the Bucs bats gone into hibernation but so has the pitching. RH Ryan Vogelsong, 3-6, 4.85 ERA pitches tonight. The Cubs counter with RH John Lackey, 10-8, 3.39 ERA. Mrs. Black-N-Gold realizes that the youngsters of the Pirates staff have been none-too impressive but what is the point of pitching an ineffective Vogey? Again? Are they planning on bringing him back for another swan song next year? Let the kids play! 3)Clearly the only place the Pirates are going at the end of the regular season is the golf course. But for goodness sakes, do you have to make it so painful to watch? Make baseball fun again! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

The crack of the bat, the thrill of the hit! Our Pittsburgh Pirates begin their final home series this season tonight at PNC Park when they clash with the NL Central-winning Chicago Cubs. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Another home game, another loss for the Pirates as they dropped their finale with the Nats yesterday, 10-7. Mrs. Black-N-Gold is a little weary from this horrible weekend so forgive her if she's unable to do the math. Regardless of whether the Bucs are still in contention for a Wild Card spot at 4.5 games back with 7 games to play, they still need to right the ship, find the win column and finish strong. Raise the Jolly Roger! 2)The Pirates put up plenty of runs yesterday. Unfortunately, it still wasn't enough. Gotta have more Hit, Run & Score! 3)The Buccos bullpen was unable to hold the lead in yesterday's loss. You got to know when to hold 'em! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

Yoi and double yoi! Happy Pigskins & Pirates Day! Our Pittsburgh Steelers hit the road to take on their cross-state rivals the Philly Iggles. These are your keys for today's game. 1)The Steelers are off to a 2-0 start. That's the 1st time that's happened since 2010. If it's 3, it's for me! 2)Through 2 games, the Steelers defense has registered just 1 quarterback sack. That came Sunday when Cincy QB Andy Dalton fell down and OLB Arthur Moats got to him. Philly is starting a rookie under center in Carson Wentz. Give the kid a real welcome to the NFL. Hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD! 3)The Steelers have not won in Philthedelphia since 1965. The last time the Steelers played in Philly, back in 2008, QB Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 8 times. The offensive line needs to see this doesn't happen again. Give Big Ben the time he needs to fly high against the Iggles. Score early, score often, score BIG! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Baseball fever, catch it! Happy Pirates & Pigskins Day! Our Pittsburgh Pirates close out their series this afternoon against the Washington Nationals at PNC Park. These are your keys for today's game. 1)The Pirates look to take the series by bouncing back in today's rubber game. The Nats celebrated on the Bucs home turf last night with a 6-1 win that helped them clinch the NL East. Scoring 1 run is no fun. Make baseball fun again. Give us more Hit, Run, & Score! 2)The Pirates are still not mathematically eliminated but they are 4.5 games out of the last wild card with 8 to play. It ain't easy but stranger things have happened. Refuse to lose! 3)The Nationals will start RH AJ Cole, 1-2, 4.68 ERA. Highly-touted Pirates rookie RH Tyler Glasnow returns to the rotation today. Glasnow is 0-1 with a 4.11 ERA. Got to get a win over Washington. Gimme a W! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Play ball, not work ball! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series with the Washington Nationals tonight at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pirates walked off with a win in dramatic fashion last night, 6-5 in 11 innings. We need more Hit, Run & Score! 2)Word before last night's game was the Nats had champagne and Bud Light on ice to celebrate clinching a trip to the postseason. A win tonight would be nice. Put the Nats on ice! 3)The Pirates will face Nationals RH Joe Ross, 7-5, 3.48 ERA. The Bucs counter with RH Ivan Nova, 5-1, 2.93 ERA. In Nova's last outing, versus Cincy, Nova suffered his first loss in Black-N-Gold. Be a Super Nova! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Everything is coming up Black-N-Gold this week as Mrs. Black-N-Gold gives all of Black-N-Gold nation the latest information on our favorite Black-N-Gold Teams, the Steelers, the Pirates and the Penguins. We send you now to our Black-N-Gold Newsdesk.

                                            THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

STEELERS

Good news for some former Steelers. The following players and/or coaches were nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame: LBs Levon Kirkland and Joey Porter, G Alan Faneca, WR Hines Ward, K Gary Anderson, and coaches Buddy Parker and Bill Cowher. Congrats to all. Hope you make the cut.

More good news, this time for a current member of our favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team. RB DeAngelo Williams was named FedEx Ground Player of the Week. Congrats to DeWill!

WR Antonio Brown received some bad news this week. The No Fun League fined AB $15,000 for the shoes he wore and the twerk he worked in the opener against Washington. Considering #84 got some more up-front money from our Steelers this offseason, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is sure it's just a drop in the bucket, besides, the money does go to charity. She just hopes that 1 day 1 of AB's celebrations don't get too out of hand and end up costing the Steelers a game.

Another game against the Cincy Bungles, another win for the Steelers. The good guys defeated the defending AFC North champs in the home opener at Heinz Field last Sunday 24-16.

On Sunday, the Steelers travel across the Keystone State to battle the Philly Iggles at 4:25pm. Both teams are 2-0 someone will find the loss column this week. We all know who that will be. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

PIRATES

Our Pirates continued their road trip this week as they tried to stay in the playoff picture.

They phinished off Philly last week with a 15-2 pasting of their cross-state rivals.

From there it was on to Cincy. The Bucs battered the Reds 9-7 in 10 innings in the opener. In Saturday's doubleheader, the Buccos took game 1 by routing the Reds 10-4. They also took the nightcap, pounding Cincy 7-3. The Pirates could not complete the Cincinnati sweep on Sunday. they dropped the finale 7-4.

Another week, another Pirate wins NL Player of the Week honors. Congrats to INF Sean Rodriguez! SRod was named Co-Player of the Week.

The Pirates continue to deal with injuries late in the season. C Chris Stewart, who is on the 60-day DL, had arthroscopic surgery on his left knew. His expected recovery is 6-8 weeks, plenty of time before the start of spring training. Get well soon, Stew!

The Pirates opened a 3-game series in Milwaukee this week. The Bucs took the opener 6-3. They continued their winning ways in Milwaukee (it doesn't seem like Mrs. Black-N-Gold should be typing those words, right?) with a 4-1 victory on Tuesday. The Buccos couldn't complete the sweep. They were beaten by the Brewers on Thursday 3-1. In that game, LF Starling Marte returned to the starting lineup following a 15-game layoff for a bad back. The Marte Partay didn't last long. He had to exit the game early when his back flared up again. Earlier in the day, the Pirates obtained veteran LH Phil Coke from the Yankees for cash considerations. He's expected to join the team tonight.

Our favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team returns home tonight for their final homestand of the regular season (see how Mrs. Black-N-Gold is keeping her hopes alive). The open a 3-game set with the Washington Nationals while they're sitting at 4.5 games back for the final Wild Card spot. They'll then face the NL Central-winning Cubs for 4 games before finishing out in St Louie for 3. Time to go on a tear. Right the ship and raise the Jolly Roger. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

PENGUINS

While some of our Penguins continue to play in the World Cup of Hockey, most of the team converged on the Lemieux Sports Complex this morning. It's the start of training camp for our favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team. It's time for the puck to drop on another season. Raise the banner and defend the Cup. Let's Go Pens!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Make baseball fun again! Our Pittsburgh Pirates open up their final homestand of the regular season with a 3-game set against the Washington Nationals that begins tonight at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Lower it. The Pirates took 1 step forward and now 2 steps back with last night's 3-1 loss to finish out the road trip in Milwaukee. The Bucs bats went silent, producing just 1 run on 5 hits. That's not going to get it. For sure, you've got to Hit, Run & Score! 2)The Pirates are just 3-13 in their last 16 at home. Is PNC Park the un-friendly confines? To add insult to injury, the last time the Black-N-Gold faced the Nats, Washington whitewashed the Bucs in 2 outta 3. The only win came in an 18-inning affair when LF Starling Marte ran into a pitch that produced the game winner.  Right the ship! 3)Washington will start LH Gio Gonzalez, 11-10, 4.83 ERA. The Buccos go with RH Jameson Taillon, 4-4, 3.39 ERA. Gonzalez is the kind of junk-ball pitcher that gives the Bucs bats fits. The Pirates are 76-76 and 4.5 back in the Wild Card with just 10 games left. Find the win column. Keep calm and raise the Jolly Roger! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Rounding 3rd and heading for home! Our Pittsburgh Pirates close out their road trip tonight when they battle the Milwaukee Brewers. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)With last night's 4-1 win, the Pirates have won 6 straight in Milwaukee. #7 would be heaven! 2)The Bucs look to clean house tonight in Brewtown. Break out the brooms! 3)The Bucco have scored 4 or more runs in their last 7 games. Ya gotta have more Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Schlemiel, schlamzel! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their matchup in Milwaukee tonight when they battle the Brewers. 1)The Pirates continued their winning ways with a win last night. You read that right, the Bucs won their 5th straight in Brewtown. Get your kicks with win #6! 2)2 rookies played a pivotal role in last night's 6-3 victory. LF Adam Frazier went 3 for 5 from the leadoff spot with 2 runs scored. 1B Josh Bell rang up 2 runs with a basehit in 3 at bats. The kids are alright! 3)RH Chad Kuhl, 4-3, 3.97 ERA goes for the Buccos. He'll face Milwaukee RH Jimmy Nelson, 8-14, 4.42 ERA. You know what would be cool? More Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

Tuesday, September 20, 2016

THE BULLPEN

On the road again! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their road trip when they open a 3-game set in Milwaukee tonight as they battle the Brewers. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The Pirates have won 5 out of their last 7. The last time they were in Milwaukee, the recorded their 1st ever sweep in Mil-town. Another sweep would be sweet! 2)Rookie LH Steven Brault is on the bump for the Bucs. At 0-3 with a 3.90 ERA, Brault is still looking for his first Major League win. Gimme a W! 3)Milwaukee starts veteran RH Matt Garza, 5-7, 4.22 ERA. Hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD with some Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

Put another W in the win column for our Pittsburgh Steelers! The Steelers stopped the Cincy Bungles in the home opener yesterday with a 24-16 victory. Mrs. Black-N-Gold looks back at the game with The Good, The Bad and the Ugly from yesterday's win.

GOOD

What can be better than a Steelers win, at home, against the defending AFC North champs? Absolutely nothing. Yes, the offense came up short of their 30-point goal but the defense came up big when it had to to seal the deal. It was an ugly day as QB Ben Roethlisberger struggled with control all day leading to 2 interceptions in the first half. Under much pressure from the Cincy D, Ben finished 19 of 37 for 259 and a 78.5 passer rating. Big Ben did stretch out enough plays to help tally 3 TDs, even rushing for a 1st down on a 14-yard scramble. His favorite receiver, Antonio Brown, also had a rough day, catching just 4 passes for 39 yards and dropping a pass on what would have been a big play. The ball bounced right off AB's numbers. Still, behind an offensive line that allowed 1 sack and 5 QB hits, ageless RB DeAngelo Williams amassed 94 yards rushing on 32 carries. DeWill had a total of 132 yards from scrimmage thanks to 4 catches for 38 yards and a touchdown.Good thing that DeWill was so good since the rest of the offense looked pretty bad.

Honorable mention goes to WR Sammie Coates and his 2 catches for 97 yards, a 48.5 yard average. Coates just needs to consistently catch the ball and the numbers will continue to grow. It didn't help that his QB was off yesterday, or else his stats could have been considerably better. Keep working and keep growing, Sammie.

BAD

The defense deserves some credit for the win, on a day when the offense didn't exhibit their high-scoring ability. The D did  allow Cincy to convert just 4 of 16 3rd downs. But the defense was also bad in the fact that they allowed Cincy to come within 1 score of tying the game. Again, the defense came up big when needed. LB James Harrison's forced fumble on Cincy WR Tyler Boyd and the subsequent recovery by S Robert Golden help secure the W. And Bungles star WR AJ Green was held mostly in check. But so many big plays were allowed and except for the aforementioned fumble recovery, the D did not make many big plays. Their loan sack in 2 games was when Bungles QB Andy Dalton fell down and LB Arthur Moats got to him. If this team doesn't start getting to the quarterback the defense may very well break.

UGLY

And if the our favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team continues to whiff on the quarterback, that, my friends, would be ugly. The pace of 1 sack every 2 games is of historically-awful proportions. Now, of course, that's not going to happen? Is it? Is the loss of OLB Bud Dupree, at least for half the season, that bad? Well, considering OLB Jarvis Jones continues to disappoint, yes, it is that bad. Mrs. Black-N-Gold is fairly certain that we'll be hearing interviews tomorrow from DL Cam Heyward again saying that he sucked and the defense sucked. He'll also say that the Steelers need to get to the QB, that he needs to get to the QB. Well, he's right. Not about the part that he or the defense sucked. But the part about not getting to the QB, yes. The defense let Dalton go 31 of 54 for 366 yards and 1 touchdown. Those aren't pedestrian numbers. If the Steelers continue to allow big chunks of yards the way they did, yesterday, they could start to see the loss column fill up real quick. The Steelers will face some QBs in the coming weeks that could take advantage of the cushion up front and pick apart the secondary (Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, Eli Manning, Dalton again). The lack of a pass rush could turn this season ugly.

Still, even an ugly win is a win. The Steelers are 2-0 atop the AFC North division. They are perched at the top with the Baltimorons who won yesterday in comeback fashion versus Cleveland. The loss keeps the Clowns in the cellar at 0-2. And in the middle are the Bungles with a 1-1 record. Next Sunday the Steelers travel across the state for a 4:25pm game against the Philly Iggles. Under rookie QB Carson Wentz, the Iggles won their opener last week against a bad Cleveland team. They'll play Da Bears in Chicago tonight so that gives them a short week to prepare for our boys in Black-N-Gold. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

Happy Pigskins & Pirates Day! Chew tobacco, chew tobacco, spit, spit, spit! Our Pittsburgh Steelers kickoff their home schedule today at Heinz Field with a rematch of last year's wild card game versus the Cincy Bungles. These are your keys for today's game. 1)Emotions ran high and things go a little testy in the Steelers wild card win over Cincy back in January. Even before that, RB Le'Veon Bell's season-ending injury was the result of a matchup with the Bungles. Our favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team has vowed that they won't let their emotions get the better of them in this game. But you know how things can get out of hand in the heat of battle. This is the Steelers 1st game against a division rival. You can't win the division unless you beat the division. Keep your head on straight! 2)DE Cam Heyward was not happy with the lack of pass rush in their win over Washington. The Jets were able to sack Cincy QB Andy Dalton 7 times last week. Hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD! 3)The Steelers put 38 on the board in their week 1 win, achieving their stated goal of putting up 30 a game. This week, do the same. Score early, score often, score BIG! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Happy Pirates & Pigskins Day! Just maybe think of me, once in awhile! Our Pittsburgh Pirates sew up their soiree in Cincy with the finale today. There's are your keys for this afternoon's game. 1)Break up the Bucs. The Pirates have won 5 of 6 and 4 straight. Keep the drive alive with win #5! 2)During the 4 game winning streak, the Buccos have scored a total of 41 runs. We want more Hit, Run & Score! 3)RH Ivan Nova, 5-0, 2.41 ERA goes for the Buccos. Cincy will start RH Keyvius Sampson, 0-1, 3.49 ERA. Since coming over from the Yanks at the trade deadline, Nova has been the Pirates most consistent starter. You could say he's been the Black-N-Gold's most consistent player. Be super, Nova! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Got kind of tired of packing and unpacking! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their sojourn in Cincy with a a double dip today. 1st game is a nooner. The 2nd is at sundown. These are your keys for today's games. 1)With last night's 10-inning. 9-7 win, the Bucs bats have produced 24 runs in the last 2 games. More, more, more Hit, Run, & Score! 2)Don't look now but the Buccos have won 2 straight. If it's 3 it's for me! And then give us more with win #4! 3)The Pirates continue to pound the ball. They knocked 2 more over the fence last night. Last night's homers were powered by LF Gregory Polanco and 3B Jung Ho Kang. Go deep! Let's Go Bucs X 2!!!!!

Friday, September 16, 2016

THE BULLPEN

Baby, if you've ever wondered, wondered whatever became of me! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their road show tonight when they open a 4-game series in Cincy against the Reds. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)In front of old friend, AJ Burnett, the Pirates got back in the win column to earn a split in Philly with a 15-2 route. The Buccos blasted 5 home runs, 2 by CF Andrew McCutchen. Chicks dig the long ball! 2)The Pirates left just 1 runner on base last night. Where was this offense for most of the season? There's always room for more Hit, Run, & Score! 3)Remember, Cincy came to our house not too long ago and took 3 of 4. It's payback time! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Have you heard the news? It's all over town. Actually, it's all over Black-N-Gold Nation as Mrs. Black-N-Gold brings you that internet sensation. That's right. It's time for another edition of The Black-N-Gold News featuring the latest on our Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. It's been a few weeks so Mrs. Black-N-Gold has some catching up to do.

                                         THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

STEELERS

In the run up to our Steelers regular season opener in Washington this past Monday night, the Steelers placed OLB Bud Dupree on IR (groin surgery). They also re-signed OLB Steven Johnson.

Our Favorite Black-N-Gold Football named their captains. QB Ben Roethlisberger is the offensive captain. DE Cam Heyward and CB William Gay are the defensive captains. S Robert Golden is the special teams captain.

The Steelers signed G David DeCastro to an extension. DeCastro inked the deal just under the wire as the Steelers don't negotiate contracts during the regular season.

The Steelers kicked off their 84th season in Washington on Monday Night Football in impressive fashion. They defeated the defending NFC East champs with an emphatic 38-16 win. Thanks to his performance in the victory, RB DeAngelo Williams was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Congrats to DWill!

The Steelers now get ready for a showdown with Cincy for the home opener Sunday afernoon. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

PIRATES

Our Pirates may be playing out the string but Mrs. Black-N-Gold still keeps tabs on our favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team, no matter the outcome. Good thing because things have not been good for the Bucs.

The were blanked by the Brewers 10-0 to complete a sweep in front the faithful at PNC.

The Buccos hoped the return of 3B Jung Ho Kang from his rehab at Indy would give the team a spark as they opened a series with St Louie. It didn't help. they were decked by the Cards in the opener 12-6.

RH Jared Hughes was named the Pirates nominee for this year's Roberto Clemente Award.

Some more roster shuffling was done in hopes of saving the season. INF Pedro Florimon and RH Trevor Williams were called up. To make room, LH Kelvin Marte and RH Curtis Partch were designated for assignment. Still, the Pirates fell to St Louie 9-7.

Williams picked up his 1st MLB win in the series finale with St Louie. The Buccos clipped the Cards 4-3. Congrats to Me Llamo Trevor!

The Bucs made it 2 straight with a 4-1 win over Cincy in their series opener. RH Ivan Nova turned in his 2nd complete game in his short time with the Black-N-Gold. Manager Clint Hurdle picked up the 500th win of his Pirates career. Congrats to Clint!

Hurdle found that he'd have to wait a considerable amount of time before he got win #501. Cincy edged the Buccos the next night 4-3. The Pirates jumped to a 4-0 lead in the next game only to fall 8-7. Then Cincy made it 3 out of 4 by shutting out the Bucs in the finale 8-0.

Some good news for one Pirates. 3B Jung Ho Kang was named NL Player of the Week. Congrats to the Kang Show!

It was announced that 2B Josh Harrison would be out 4-6 weeks with a right groin strain. Considering the Pirates aren't likely to go on an epic run and go deep into the postseason, JHay's year is done. Get well soon, JHay!

To add insult to injury, the Pirates lost their opener Monday night in Philly 6-2.

More injury to insult: RH Gerrit Cole was placed on the 60-day DL. Joining him is his favorite backstop, C Chris Stewart as well as C Elias Diaz. Get well soon, Cole Train, Stew and Elias! Meanwhile, C Jacob Stallings and LH Zach Phillips were recalled. The Pirates also obtained LH Wade LeBlanc from Seattle for cash. Then the Pirates actually went out and won a game, defeating Philly 5-3. The Bucs were right back in the loss column last night, falling to Philly 6-2. They'll play the finale in Philly tonight, trying desperately to get back in the win column. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

PENGUINS

Not much going on with our Penguins. They continue to show Lord Stanley's Cup a good time. And fans that are jonesing for hockey were treated to some exhibition hockey yesterday at Consol Energy Center. The World Cup of Hockey was in town. It was an opportunity to see some of our Favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team as well as some of the best players from around the league and the world.

Real hockey starts in less than a month. Let's Go Pens!!!

THE BULLPEN

Play ball! Our Pittsburgh Pirates wrap up their series in Philadelphia tonight with their phinale versus the Phillies. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Another game another step back in the loss column for our Bucs. They fell to Philly 6-2, running themselves out of a potential rally in the top of the 9th. That's not the 1st time this season they've blundered on the basepaths and it certainly won't be the last. Just who is responsible for this? 3B coach Rick Sofield? The players? Manager Clint Hurdle? There's no doubt about it. The Buccos are succo. Run into a win! 2)The only reliable pitcher for the Pirates this past month has been RH Ivan Nova. Since they won't try to retain him at season's end, why not just pitch him till his arm falls off. We need some Novacane! 3)Kidding aside, this is painful to watch. It's as bad as Mike Johnston's final days with the Penguins. If the Pirates aren't interested, then why are we? Because we bleed Black-N-Gold! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

Our Pittsburgh Steelers put a W in the win column their first time out thanks to Monday's 38-16 whitewashing of Washington. With another football season upon us, Mrs. Black-N-Gold brings you another season of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly following every Steelers game.

GOOD

A 38-16 win over the defending NFC East champs is very good. There were many good things about the game, too. Several youngsters looked good (WR Eli Rogers, TE Jesse James, S Robert Golden, CB Sean Davis). Allowing only 16 points, the worrisome defense looked good. And after a slow start the offense looked really good. But Mrs. Black-N-Gold can't help but wonder "Are the Steelers really this good or is Washington really that bad".  I'll guess the jury is still out on that one.

BAD

Looking at this week's bad, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is going to quote the great American poets, Run DMC, "Not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good". What does she mean? Well, look at RB DeAngelo Williams' stats; 26 rushes for 143 yrds and 2 TDs. WR Antonio Brown continued to show why he's the best wideout on the planet with 8 receptions for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns. Let us not forget QB Ben Roethlisberger who was 27 of 37 for 300 yards and 3 TDs with a 112.4 QB rating. While we're praising Ben, congrats to #7 for making NFL history. He completed his 500th pass to AB, making him the only QB to complete 500 passes to 3 different teammates (Hines Ward & Heath Miller being the other 2). Yes, DWill, Tony Toetap and Big Ben were all bad men on Monday night. But the baddest of them all were the offensive line. They kept Ben upright except for 1 sack and they allowed all of these men the opportunities to put up impressive fantasy numbers. Give the O-Line a hand!

UGLY

Mrs. Black-N-Gold would be remiss if she didn't mention the exceptional play of LB Ryan Shazier Monday night. #50 was all over, registering 6 tackles, 5 solo, 2 passes defended, and an interception. He did all this and didn't even play the entire game. Shazier left early with a knee injury. He later returned to the sideline, campaigning to return to action. Wisely, Coach Mike Tomlin did not acquiesce. Our favorite Black-N-Gold Foottball Team is counting on Shazier to have a breakout year. In order to do that, he'll have to do something he's yet to do in his young career and that's stay healthy. If Shazier gets hurt and is out for an extended period of time, things could get UGLY for the D. Otherwise, fear Shazier!

It's time to turn the page and look ahead to Sunday's home opener at Heinz Field. The Steelers will have a rematch of their wild card win from January versus the Cincy Bungles. Like the Steelers, Cincy is 1-0 thanks to their win Sunday over the Jets. The Baltimorons are also 1-0 with their win over Buffalo. And sitting in the cellar at 0-1 are the Clowns.

This week's game will be a better test of how the Steelers stand in the early going. They'll need to keep their wits about them and not let emotions run too high against the defending AFC North champs. You can't win the division if you don't beat your division rivals. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

I have seen enough to know I have seen too much! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series in Philadelphia tonight when the phace the Phils. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Hold onto your hats, Pirates fans! The Buccos righted the ship with their 5-3 win, if only for a night. Go for 2 in a row! 2)Rookie LH Steven Brault is on the bump for the Bucs. He's 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA. The youngster is still looking for that ever-elusive 1st MLB win. Gimme a W! 3)Brault and the Buccos will face Philly rookie RH Jake Thompson, 1-5, 6.05 ERA. Hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD with the Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Use your head, that's that lump 3 feet above your ass! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series with their cross-state rivals tonight when they phace the Phillies in Philly. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Following another loss last night, 6-2, today's keys to the game are brought to you by the letter "P" as in putrid, porous, pitiful, pathetic. This team has no desire whatsoever to finish the season on a winning note. They just want to finish the season. Period. They show it in their pitching (both starting and the bullpen), they show it in the batter's box, they show it on the basepaths, they show it in the field and it shows in the coaching. If they don't want to be there, please put some players out there that do. Play to win the game! 2)The Bucs bats have become dormant. Again. Scoring 2 runs in 2 games won't cut it. There is always, always, ALWAYS room for more Hit, Run, & Score! 3)No one wants to hear a fat lady sing. To Mrs. Black-N-Gold, the end of baseball season truly means the end of summer. Allow Mrs. Black-N-Gold to quote the great American poet, Donald Henley, I can tell you my love for you well still be strong, after the boys of summer have gone Now, stop embarrassing yourselves and got out and play Bucco baseball the way it's mean to be played! Lets Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

We got a feeling Pittsburgh's going to the Super Bowl! Happy Pigskins and Pirates Day! Our Pittsburgh Steelers kickoff their quest for a 7th Super Bowl trophy tonight when they invade our nation's capital on Monday Night Football. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)The young and injury-riddled defense will have their work cut out for them with Jordan Reed. The 4th-year tight end had 87 receptions for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. He is a big, physical tight end, the kind that gives the Steelers fits (think Gronk or KC TE Travis Kelce). You've got to make this kid a non-factor in this game. Hit him early, hit him often, hit him HARD! 2)The Steelers offense is now on to plan B, C and D with the announcement that WR Markus Wheaton is out for this game. That leaves QB Ben Roethlisberger's options at receiver as Antonio Brown and a wing and a prayer (Darrius Heyward-Bey, Sammie Coates and Eli Rogers). And 2nd year TE Jesse James will get the start with Heath Miller retired and Ladarius Green PUP (or MIA). The key is to get the lead. Score early, score often, score BIG! 3)With the injuries already piling up for the Steelers, the youngsters will be called upon early. It's time to put up or shut up. Next man up! Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Now this is a story, all about how, my life got flipped-turned-upside down! Happy Pirates and Pigskins Day! Our Pittsburgh Pirates set sail for Philly tonight to faceoff against their interstate rivals, the Phillies. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Mrs. Black-N-Gold is reminded of the old tune, "Please, Mr. Postman" because the Bucs are mailing it in. Big time. You want proof? How about yesterday's latest debacle, 8-0 to cellar-dwelling Cincy. Yes, the Buccos are limping to the finish. Mrs. Black-N-Gold is in it till the end. Now how about you? Go out with a bang, not a whimper! 2)A big goose egg is not a way to win the game. Please, please, PLEASE, Hit, Run, & Score! 3)RH Gerrit Cole makes his return to the rotation tonight. What better way to get on the winning track. All aboard the Cole Train for a win! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE 50-YARD LINE

Attention, Black-N-Gold Nation. The calendar has now turned to September. As we bid a fond farewell to summer it's time to welcome in the start of another season of Pittsburgh Steelers football. Join Mrs. Black-N-Gold today as she looks at the 3 units of our Steelers (offense, defense, special teams) and looks ahead to their quest for a 7th Super Bowl Championship.

OFFENSE

As long as QB Ben Roethlisberger is healthy, this team is a Super Bowl contender. No Le'Veon Bell for 3 games? No problem. RB DeAngelo Williams, a former 1000 yard-rusher is back to lift the load left by Bell's suspension. Let's hope he can stay healthy because RB Fitzgerald Touissant is the next man up after DeWill. Martavis Bryant suspended for the year? The Black-N-Gold boasts the best WR in the galaxy in Antonio Brown. Problem is, Markus Wheaton was hurt most of training camp and preseason. That leaves the greybeard Darrius Heyward-Bey and the inexperienced Sammie Coates and Eli Rogers. TE Heath Miller hung up his cleats in the offseason. The Steelers promptly signed former San Diego Charger Lardarius Green. Green has yet to see the field in practice or in preseason action. He is currently on the PUP list with an ankle. Or a migraine. Or whatever actually ails him. That leaves 2nd year man Jesse James. And can the offensive line remain healthy for the entire season? The offense has designs on putting up 30 plus points a game. If they stay healthy, anything is possible. If they don't? The only way the get to the Super Bowl is if they buy tickets.

DEFENSE

2 members of the starting defensive line, Cam Heyward and Javon Hargrave, enter tomorrow night's opener with injuries, an ankle and a knee respectively. The D-Line is thin as it is. Speaking of injuries and thin, how about those outside linebackers? Bud Dupree is on IR, Arthur Moats is best as a back up, James Harrison is 38 years old and Jarvis Jones is a bust. If the linebackers can't get to the QB and create pressure then the pressure will be on the secondary. Again. Injuries and inexperience riddle the DBs this season. The youngsters of the D will have to step up their game and get on the same page in a hurry with this unit.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The kicking started out as an injury-marred issue last season until the Steelers stumbled upon K Chris Boswell. What a find he was! P Jordan Berry returns as does LS Greg Warren who has been a rock at that position for many seasons. The problem with the not-so-special teams is that they give up way too much field position with entirely too many penalties. And who is returning kicks/punts this season? AB is great but you can't risk losing your best/healthy receiver. Depth chart shows Coates on kicks and AB on punts. We'll see how that shakes out as the season progresses.

So there you have it. A look at our favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team in a nutshell. When Mrs. Black-N-Gold originally saw the schedule, she had the Steelers winning the AFC North with a 12-5 record. Now, thanks to various circumstances, she's thinking 9-7 or 10-6, at best. This team has too many question marks and not enough answers. Cincy is still the top dog in this division. Surely they'll want revenge on the Steelers for the playoff win that they handed them back in January. But anything can happen on any given Sunday. You play to win the game. This team could get healthy and go on a run even from the Wild Card position. It's happened before. It can happen again.

Mrs. Black-N-Gold made her pick long before the Sport Illustrated NFL Preview Issue hit the newstands. Besides, SI got it wrong. Mark it down. Steelers over Cardinals in the Super Bowl. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Put me in coach! Our Pittsburgh Pirates close out their homestand this afternoon when they clash with the Cincy Reds at PNC Park. These are your keys for today's game. 1)Someone throw the Pirates a line 'cause they're sinking fast following last night's latest loss, 8-7. Gotta hand it to the Bucs. Mrs. Black-N-Gold thought when they had the 21-year losing streak, that her favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball Team made losing an art form. Still, they continue to amaze by finding the loss column in new ways. They had a 4-0 lead last night only to throw it all overboard. You got to know when to hold 'em! 2)LH Brandon Finnegan, 8-10, 4.17 ERA starts for Cincy. RH Ryan Vogelsong, 3-4, 4.07 ERA, is on the bump for the Bucs. Score early, score often, score BIG; Hit, Run, & Score! 3)How about we end the next-to-last homestand on a winning note? Gimme a W! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

The song remains the same! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series with Cincy tonight when they face the Reds at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Boy, that was fast. If you blinked, you missed the Buccos winning streak of all of 2 games following last night's loss in the opener, 4-3. Going 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position, leaving 8 men on base and hitting into 4 double plays is not the way. We need Hit, Run, & Score for sure! 2)The Bucs never had the lead last night. They'd claw their way back into the game only to have the pitching staff give it right back. Pitch in! 3)Cincy starts RH Robert Stephenson, 2-1, 3.12 ERA. He'll face Pirates RH Drew Hutchison, making his Black-N-Gold debut. Hutchison came to Pittsburgh from the Jays in the "trade" that sent Francisco Liriano and 2 prospects to Toronto. It's time for Hutch to be clutch! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series tonight with the Cincy Reds at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)With last night's 4-1 victory over Cincy, the Pirates raised the Jolly Roger for 2 consecutive games. When is the last time we said that? If it's 3, it's for me! 2)Cincy starts RH Tim Adleman, 2-3, 4.02 ERA. The Buccos goes with LH Steven Brault, 0-2, 3.32 ERA. So many other Pirates rookies have gotten off the schneid this season with a litany of MLB firsts. It's time for Brault to get his. Another W will do! 3)2 wins in a row and the Black-N-Gold scored 4 runs in each game. We want more Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

Thursday, September 8, 2016

THE BULLPEN

The Bucs are going all the way! Our Pittsburgh Pirates begin a 4-game series tonight with the Cincy Reds at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Break up the Bucs, the streak is over! That's right, Black-N-Gold Nation, the Pirates found the win column last night. They clipped the Cards 4-3 to end their 8-game losing streak. Now it's time to start a winning streak. Make it 2, gimme a W! 2)RH Dan Straily, 11-7, 4.83 ERA starts for Cincy. He'll face Buccos RH Ivan Nova, 4-0, 2.89 ERA. Nova is undefeated in Black-N-Gold. Keep the streak alive, get win #5! 3)The Bucs had just enough offense to win the game last night, 4 runs on 11 hits. Still, they were just 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position. You can't keep leaving Bucs on the pond. We always need more Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Root, root, root for the home team! Our Pittsburgh Pirates try desperately to salvage a win tonight versus St Louie in front of the home crowd at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)You've got to hand it to the Buccos. People keep saying they've been inconsistent this season but they've consistently found the loss column for 8 straight games. And they bring losing to a whole new level, even more so than their record 21 straight losing seasons of a just a few years ago by finding new ways to lose. Mrs. Black-N-Gold has some numbers for you from last night's 9-7 loss. The number 2, as in 2 outs and 2 strikes. The Pirates had St Louie on the ropes with a 9-6 lead when "closer" Tony Watson came in for the save. He saved it alright saving the Bucs losing streak by giving up 3 homers. You've got to know when to hold 'em! 2)If the Pirates ship is going to continue to sink in this manner, why continue to trot out virtually the same lineup? Got JHay at the top of the order? Why not try Adam Frazier? Is John Jaso the future at 1B? Keep Josh Bell out there so he can get all the reps he needs. What's the point of pitching Ryan Vogelsong? Why not give Tyler Glasnow another shot? The kids are alright! 3)And now comes the most important key to the game, the one that Mrs. Black-N-Gold claims is a constant key to the win column because the way our pitching is going, you can never have enough of this. Hit, Run, & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

There's no crying in baseball! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series with St Louie tonight when they clash with the Cardinals at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, the Pirates fell to the Cards in the series opener yesterday, 12-6. That's 7 losses in a row. #8 would not be great! 2)In the past 2 games, Pirates pitchers have surrendered 22 runs. With pitching like that, we need all the offense we can get. You gotta have more Hit, Run & Score! 3)The Pirates have yet to find the win column in the month of September. There's no need to suck! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

Monday, September 5, 2016

THE BULLPEN

Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks! Our Pittsburgh Pirates begin a 3-game set today with the St Louie Cardinals. These are your keys for today's Labor Day game. 1)Greetings from the beach, where Mrs. Black-N-Gold is visiting her Black-N-Gold Nephew. To quote the great American poet James Buffett, the weather is here, wish you were beautiful. With yesterday's latest beating, 10-0, at the hands of the Brewers, our Pirates may be mailing it in but even on vacation, Mrs. Black-N-Gold is ready to roll. During this latest sweep, the Bucs allowed 18 runs in 3 games and scored a pitiful 4 runs in the same stretch. To Milwaukee. Ugh! Not only is the Jolly Roger missing, so is the offense and the pitching. You've got to, got to, got to Hit, Run, & Score! 2)Believe it or not, the Bucs are still just 3.5 games out for the 2nd wild card. A strong showing vs St Louie could put them back in it. Deck the Cards! 3)St Louie starts RH  Adam Wainwright, 9-8, 4.53 ERA. The Buccos go with RH Chad Kuhl, 3-2, 3.70 ERA. Winning is cool. Gimme a W! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Stop the presses! Stop the presses! That's right, Black-N-Gold Nation. Mrs. Black-N-Gold is back with all the information. She has the latest on our favorite Black-N-Gold Teams, the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins. It's time for another edition of The Black-N-Gold News.

                                    THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

PIRATES

More roster moves were made this week in anticipation of the roster expansion at the start of September. In a paper move, UTL Adam Frazier was optioned to Bristol to make room for RH AJ Schugel from Indy.

Our Pirates promptly went and beat the Brewers 3-1 to complete the sweep. It's the 1st time our favorite Black-N-Gold Baseball team cleaned house in Milwaukee. How sweep it is!

Word also leaked that the Bucs would have a representative at former Heisman winning QB Tim Tebow's workout later in the week. 28 MLB teams were expected to send reps to give Tebow a look.

Monday the Pirates opened a 3-game series with NL Central leading-Chicago. Prior to the game, the Buccos placed RH Gerrit Cole on the 15 day DL with elbow inflammation. LH Steven Brault was recalled from Indy to take Cole's place and start Monday's game.

The opener had it all: action, intrigue. What it lacked was a Pirates win. The good guys fell to the Cubbies in 13 innings, 8-7.

1B Josh Bell received some accolades this week. The rookie was named an International League post-season All-Star for his play at Indy. Congrats to JBell!

The Pirates shuffled more players and paper when they called up LH Kelvin Marte and INF Alen Hanson from Indy. They sent LH Steven Brault and RH Jameson Taillon to Bristol and designated LH Kyle Lobstein for assignment. They also sent OF Tito Polo and LH Stephen Tarpley to the Yanks to complete the deadline made for RH Ivan Nova.

Some Pirates prospects made the news for all the wrong reasons this week. Indy INF Gift Ngoepe and RH Dovydas Neverauskas were suspended for the remainder of the season. They were involved in an altercation at a bar over the weekend.

All these moves and the Bucs couldn't pull it together. They lost Tuesday night's game 3-0.

Lobstein ended up getting traded to Baltimore for LH Zach Phillips. Phillips was then sent to Triple A Indy.

And again the Pirates fell to the Cubs as they were swept out of Chicago, 6-5.

The Buccos also obtained LH Jake Brentz and RH Pedro Vasquez from Seattle. This move completed the Arquimedes Caminero deal. The roster continued to expand, too. Taillon, Brault and Frazier were "recalled" from Bristol. INF Jason Rogers was called up from Indy. And C Chris Stewart was reinstated from the DL.

The Bucs still found themselves in the loss column. The Brewers came to town and took the opener 1-0. They took the series last night in a 7-4 beating of the Buccos. To add insult to injury, RH Neftalii Feliz left the game with an injury, the dreaded "right arm discomfort." Today they look to clean house at PNC Park.

St Louie pays a visit starting Monday with the Pirates sinking like a stone in the standings. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

STEELERS

Our Steelers suffered some significant injuries in last week's preseason game vs Philly. T Marcus Gilbert was diagnosed with a hyper-extended elbow. He joins DL Cam Heyward (high ankle sprain) as questionable to the opener at Washington on September 12. Both players way they'll play. Only time and the medical staff will tell. Get well soon!

Speaking of injuries, free agent signee TE Ladarius Green starts the season on the PUP list with an ankle. Or a concussion. Or whatever else ails him. If/when he plays for the Black-N-Gold, it won't be for at least 6 weeks.

A few Steelers received some good news this week. WR Antonio Brown had his contract restructured. This is a way for the Steelers to kick AB more cash until they get around to negotiating a new contract for him. LB James Harrison received word from the NFL that he has been cleared of PED allegations.

Our favorite Black-N-Gold Football Team placed QB Bruce Gradkowski on IR with a hamstring. To replace Grad, the Steelers claimed QB Zach Mettenberger off waivers from San Diego. They also worked out RB Karlos Williams. It may not work out, though. Williams is suspended for the 1st 4 games of the season.

The Steelers limped to the finish of the preseason with an 18-6 loss to Carolina on Thursday. They finished the exhibition season with a 1-3 record.

Yesterday saw a plethora of moves as they Steelers trimmed their roster to the 53-man limit. They acquired CB Justin Gilbert, a former 1st round pick, from the Browns for a 2018 6th round pick. Gilbert may be more damaged goods as he is currently in the NFLs concussion protocol.

They cut numerous players, as well. Gone are WRs Demarcus Ayers, Cobi Hamilton & Marcu Tucker, RBs Brandon Brown-Dukes & Cameron Stingily, OL Shahbaz Ahmed, Antoine Everett, Matt Feiler & Wade Hansen, DL Lavon Hooks, Caushaud Lyons & Johnny Maxey, CBs Montell Garner, Doran Grant, Al-Hajj Shabazz  & Donald Washington, LBs Travis Feeney, Steven Johnson & Jermauria Rasco, QB Bryn Renner & S Ray Vinopal. They also waived/injured TE Paul Lang.

They'll sign their practice squad players today. Then it's time to start preparation for next week's kickoff September 12 in Washington. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!

PENGUINS

Our Pens announced this week that F Phil Kessel could miss the beginning of the season. Phil the Thrill continues to recover from offseason hand surgery. Get well soon, Phil!

There are now 39 days till our favorite Black-N-Gold Hockey Team defends their championship. Let's Go Pens!!!

THE BULLPEN

Baseball fever, catch it! Our Pittsburgh Pirates close out their series with the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon at PNC Park. These are your keys for today's game. 1)Lower it. Again. The Pirates found themselves in the loss column again following their latest defeat, 7-4, last night. Seriously, put out an APB for the ever-elusive Jolly Roger because that sucker hasn't been seen in these parts in quite some time. The Pirates are 1-7 in their last 8 home games. Stop SUCKN and start BUCN! 2)4 runs in 2 games versus an also-ran is not the way to win ballgames. It's all about more Hit, Run & Score! 3)Milwaukee tries to sweep their way out of Pittsburgh with RH Chase Anderson, 7-11, 4.92 ERA. The Bucs try to salvage a win with LH Steven Brault, 0-1, 3.86 ERA. All hands on deck. Right the ship and don't quit! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Play ball! Our Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series with Milwaukee tonight when they battle the  Brewers at PNC Park. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)Lower the Jolly Roger. The Pirates where shutout in last night's opener 1-0. That's the 2nd time this week the Bucs were blanked. Better get on the stick real quick. There's always room for more Hit, Run, & Score! 2)Luckily, the song remains the same in the standings as St Louie, the Mets and Marlins lost, too. With just 30 games left in the season, it's no time to keep treading water. We started off September in the loss column. Get in the win column and stay there. Make it a September to remember. Refuse to lose! 3)The Brewers will have RH Jimmy Nelson, 7-13, 4.45 ERA, on the bump. The Buccos go with RH Ivan Nova, 11-6, 4.41 ERA. Nova has been better than expected since coming to the Black-N-Gold in a deadline day deal. We'll need him more of the same to win this game. Be Super, Nova! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

THE BULLPEN

Root, root, root for the home team! Our Pittsburgh Pirates return home to the friendly confines (?) of PNC Park tonight when they open a 3-game series versus the Milwaukee Brewers. These are your keys for tonight's game. 1)There's no place like home? They went 1-5 on their last home stand and swept the Brewers in 4 games in Milwaukee last week, then the Bucs limped home following a 3-game sweep in Chicago. It should be good for our favorite Black-N-Gold team to return to the comforts of home on the North Shore. Love that home cooking! 2)Don't look now but the Mets jumped over the Pirates and are 2 games out of the wild card. The Pirates are 2.5 back and the Marlins are just 3 back. The Buccos need to get back in the win column and follow-up on last week's thumping of Milwaukee and bruise the Brew Crew. You gotta win to get in! 3)RH Junior Guerra, 7-3, 2.93 ERA, is expected to come off the DL and start for Milwaukee tonight. The Buccos go with RH Jameson Taillon, 3-3, 3.39 ERA. Jamo was very un-Taillon-like in his last start, lasting just 3 innings and giving up 5 runs on 7 hits with 2 home runs, 3 strikeouts and 2 walks, in what turned out to be a 9-6 Pirates win over the Brewers. Give the kid a hand, will ya? Brew up some Hit, Run & Score! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!
