BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Stop the presses, stop the presses! It's time again for the latest edition of Mrs. Black-N-Gold's "Black-N-Gold News". Mrs. Black-N-Gold attempts to amaze you with the latest, up-to-the-minute news coverage on your favorite Black-N-Gold teams: Pens, Pirates and Steelers.

  THE BLACK-N-GOLD NEWS

Penguins-Our Pens appeared to have bounced back last weekend, going 2-0 over the weekend over  playoff also-rans, Arizona and San Jose. They even saw the return of F Patric Hornqvist and C Evegni Malkin. Things were looking up. Then they lost D Kris Letang to a concussion in the shootout victory over the Sharks. Tanger remains out and is day-to-day. They are also still without the services of D Christian Ehrhoff. Things got off to a good start Wednesday night at home against Philly. C Sidney Crosby scored his 300th career goal. Unfortunately, that was about it, as Philly continued their dominance of the Pens at Consol Energy Center, winning 4-1. To add insult to injury, Geno missed that game with an undisclosed injury and is again day-to-day. Some good news is that 19-year old F Kasper Kapanen, the Pens 1st round pick in 2014, has been called up to the Wilkes Barre-Scranton Baby Pens. He is expected to join the big club once the NHL playoffs begin as the Pens will have no cap restrictions then. There's only a handful of games left in the regular season as the Pens push for playoff position. The New York Strangers have already wrapped up the Metropolitan Division title but there's still time to catch up to the Isles and Craps who are both one point ahead of the Pens' 95 points. Let's Go Pens!!!

Pirates-Our Pirates closed out Grapefruit League action at 15-11 with a few ties thrown in. They'll play the Sillies in Philly this weekend as a tune-up to get them ready to "Play Ball" in Cincy on Monday. Manager Clint Hurdle announced this week that LH Jeff Locke will be in the starting rotation and RH Vance Worley will work out of the bullpen for the time being. The Bucs also re-opened negotiations with RF Gregory Polanco on a long-term contract. The Pirates tried that last spring and could not come to an agreement with El Coffee. Hopefully they'll come up with a better brew this time. Other roster moves this week include LH Clayton Richard declining his opt-out clause. He'll remain with the Buccos in extending spring training. He's next stop is expected to be Triple A Indy. Also, RHPs John Holdzkom and Rob Scahill were option to Indy and RHP Blake Wood was assigned to minor league camp as the Pirates look to get down to the 25-man roster. The Bucs also acquired 1B Hunter Morris from the Milwaukee Brewers for a player to be named later. CF Andrew McCutchen left Wednesday night's game versus the Baltimorons as he appeared to pull up lame when he held up running out a ground ball to first. Cutch and the Pirates feel it is a minor thing and he'll be good to go on Monday. Mrs. Black-N-Gold will bring you her preview and bold prediction for the Buccos to get you started for the season on Monday. Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

Steelers-Not too much news out of the Steelers Southside facility this week. They did re-sign DE Clifton Geathers to a 1-year deal. Geathers did not dress for any games last season after the Steelers brought him on board following Brett Keisel's injury. There was a rumor during the middle of the week that S Troy Polamalu was scheduled to make a big announcement. It turned out to be just that, a rumor. Coach Mike Tomlin visited with the Pirates while in the area for pro days. He mentioned he could use RHP Jared Hughes at TE and CF Andrew McCutchen to return punts. Let's hope the Steelers situation isn't that bad and he was just kidding. Let's Go Steelers!!!!!!
